Experimental study and SEM-EDS analysis of agglomerates from gasification of biomass in fluidized beds

Nora C. I. S. Furuvik et al.

Summary: This study compared the bed agglomeration of wood pellets and grass pellets and found that both biomasses form agglomerates at temperatures between 700°C and 900°C. More accumulated ash and agglomerates were collected from the gasification of grass pellets compared to wood pellets, indicating different agglomeration mechanisms. The surface of grass agglomerates was dominated by Si, Ca, and K, while the surface of wood agglomerates was mainly dominated by Si and K.

Nucleation and crystal growth kinetic parameter optimization of a continuous Poiseuille flow struvite crystallizer using a discretized population balance and dynamic fluid model

Max Burns et al.

Summary: A model incorporating population balance, fluid flow equations, and kinetic relations was developed to optimize nucleation and growth rates of struvite in recovering phosphorus. Sensitivity analysis showed the influence of power law rate constants on PSD and phosphorus concentration. The optimized parameters agreed reasonably well with previous studies, providing confidence in the results.

Bench-scale bubbling fluidized bed systems around the world - Bed agglomeration and collapse: A comprehensive review

Francisco Regis Machado Nascimento et al.

Summary: Thermochemical conversion through gasification is an important technology for energy recovery from solid fuel, with higher conversion efficiency than combustion and pyrolysis. The most common technologies for this conversion involve fluidized bed or bubbling fluidized bed systems, operating at isothermal temperatures to promote chemical reactions and gas-solid contact. High gasification temperatures improve carbon conversion efficiency but may increase the risk of bed agglomeration, especially with alkali-rich biomasses.

Integrated modeling methodology for ash agglomeration in poly-disperse fluidized beds using particle population framework

Aditi B. Khadilkar et al.

Summary: This study discusses a unique agglomeration modeling methodology based on binary collisions to analyze the effects of heterogeneity in ash chemistry and granular physics. By utilizing methods such as population balance and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations, changes in particle size distribution (PSD) in fluidized beds were determined. The results show that ash agglomeration is most effective at temperatures below 850 degrees C when the binder content is low.
