Numerical analysis of vortex-induced vibration on a flexible cantilever riser for deep-sea mining system

Guoqing Jin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic responses of a flexible cantilever riser in a deep-sea mining system. By simulating cross-flow vortex-induced vibrations under different bottom weights and current speeds, it is found that the number of vibration modes decreases with increasing bottom weight, and higher-order modes are excited with increasing current speed.

Effects of roughness on hydrodynamic characteristics of a submerged floating tunnel subject to steady currents

P. X. Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of surface roughness caused by marine fouling on the hydrodynamic forces on a submerged floating tunnel (SFT) are investigated. The sensitivity analysis to different roughness parameters is performed, and an optimized parametric cross-section for an SFT is proposed. The results show that the parametric shape can effectively mitigate the hydrodynamic forces on the fouled SFT.

Flexible cylinder flow-induced vibration

Leixin Ma et al.

Summary: This paper provides a selective review of the recent progress in physics insight and modeling of flexible cylinder flow-induced vibrations (FIVs), including the understanding of structural response, hydrodynamics, and the impact of key structural properties. It also discusses the advancement of artificial intelligent and machine learning techniques in improving the modeling of FIVs.

Understanding the higher harmonics of vortex-induced vibration response using a trend-constrained, machine learning approach

Leixin Ma et al.

Summary: This paper presents a data-driven model to predict the higher harmonic response of flexible cylinders subjected to vortex-induced vibrations. The model considers the effects of damping and bending stiffness, and improves the predictions by incorporating physical constraints. The study finds that higher stress ratios are associated with smaller damping parameter values, smaller bending stiffness ratios, traveling waves, and single-mode-dominated responses.

Vortex-induced forces of crossflow and inline oscillating bluff bodies at moderate Reynolds numbers

Dixia Fan et al.

Summary: The Reynolds number plays an important role in the vibration response of a cross-flow only oscillating cylinder in the uniform flow. The maximum displacement increases with the increase of Reynolds number in the sub-critical regime. However, Reynolds number has a less stronger effect on displacement when the cylinder is allowed to move in both the In-line and the cross-flow directions in the sub-critical regime.

Flow-induced vibration of flexible cylinders covered by fixed fairings with different chord-thickness ratios

Hanxu Zheng et al.

Summary: Fairings are important devices in offshore and marine engineering to suppress vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). However, when the rotational elements of fairings fail, severe galloping oscillations may occur. There is limited research on the galloping oscillation mechanism for slender flexible cylinders.

Learning nonlinear operators via DeepONet based on the universal approximation theorem of operators

Lu Lu et al.

Summary: This study extends the capabilities of neural networks with the introduction of the deep operator network (DeepONet), which can be used to learn various operators, including explicit and implicit operators. Different formulations of the input function space were studied and their effect on generalization error for 16 diverse applications was examined.
