Elasto-Kinematics and Instantaneous Invariants of Compliant Mechanisms Based on Flexure Hinges

Christian Iandiorio et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the elasto-kinematics and instantaneous invariants of flexure hinges with a direct approach, making use of a nonlinear model to predict their behaviour. It provides the comprehensive form of the differential equations governing the nonlinear geometric response and solves it for flexure hinges with constant sections. The main result is that the evolution of the centre of instantaneous rotation is loading-path dependent, indicating that a careful kinematic synthesis of compliant mechanisms should take into consideration the applied loads and their histories.

Theoretical Analysis on Nonlinear Buckling, Post-Buckling of Slender Beams and Bi-Stable Mechanisms

Ke Wu et al.

Summary: Compliant mechanisms utilize the elastic deformation of compliant members to transfer motion, force, and energy. This paper focuses on the buckling and post-buckling behaviors of beams in compliant mechanisms, and extends the linear theory to handle multi-mode buckling problems using bifurcation theory. Five representative beam buckling cases are studied, followed by detailed theoretical investigations of their post-buckling behaviors. A novel type of bi-stable mechanisms called pre-buckled bi-stable mechanisms (PBMs) is proposed, combining the features of both rigid and compliant mechanisms.

A review on buckling and postbuckling of thin elastic beams

Samir Emam et al.

Summary: This paper reviews models and solutions for the buckling and postbuckling of beams from the 1950s to present day, discussing the formulation of nonlinear buckling problems for beams with movable and immovable ends, providing both approximate and exact solutions. It aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for researchers interested in the buckling and postbuckling of beams, combining outcomes from structural dynamics and nonlinear vibration perspectives.

A comprehensive static modeling methodology via beam theory for compliant mechanisms

Ke Wu et al.

Summary: The study establishes a comprehensive modeling methodology based on beam theory to characterize static planar deflection of slender beams, which is applied to solve various loading scenarios in compliant mechanism design. The approach treats beam-deflection problems as boundary value problems of an ordinary differential equation and utilizes a modified collocation method for solving. This methodology is also utilized for modeling representative compliant mechanisms with large-deflection strokes, such as compliant parallelograms.

Insight into numerical solutions of static large deflection of general beams for Mechanisms

Ke Wu et al.

Summary: In this paper, commonly-used beam modeling methods in Compliant Mechanisms (CMs) are reviewed, with a focus on solving the boundary value problem of an ordinary differential equation. Numerical methods for straight beams and initially curved beams are introduced, and the feasibility of synthesizing CMs using these methods is demonstrated through the modeling of representative revolute mechanisms. Error analysis confirms the effectiveness of these numerical methods.

Second-order approximation pseudo-rigid model of circular arc flexure hinge

Mattia Cera et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel pseudo-rigid model for describing the elasto-kinematic behavior of circular arc flexure hinges under a pure moment. The proposed model, based on kinematic study and second-order motion invariants, accurately describes the relative motion between the connected bodies. The model has been compared with analytical formulas and finite element models, showing good accordance even for large deflections.

Buckling and postbuckling of extensible, shear-deformable beams: Some exact solutions and new insights

Samir Emam et al.

Summary: This paper presents exact solutions for the buckling loads and postbuckling states of extensible, shear deformable beams. The dependence of the buckling load on the length-to-radius of gyration is discussed, as well as the significant effects of extensibility and shear deformation on the buckling loads and the postbuckling response.
