Hydrogeochemical processes in rural coastal aquifer (Haha region, Morocco)

Salah Ouhamdouch

Summary: In this study, the evaluation of groundwater in the Haha region using the hydrogeochemical approach is conducted. The chemical composition of the groundwater is predominantly Ca-Mg-Cl, Na-HCO3, and Na-Cl. The results show that water-rock interaction, cation exchange processes, and marine effect are the main factors affecting groundwater mineralization. The majority of the analyzed samples exceed the WHO thresholds for human consumption, indicating the need for treatment before consumption.

Morocco's coastal aquifers: Recent observations, evolution and perspectives towards sustainability

Yassine Ez-zaouy et al.

Summary: Coastal areas of Morocco have experienced intense socioeconomic development, leading to overexploitation of coastal aquifers and degradation of water quality. The study analyzed databases from thirteen MCA using statistical methods to investigate mineralization and salinization processes. Results showed that groundwater in MCA is mainly affected by seawater intrusion and water-rock interaction, with most samples located in the moderate to very saline zone. Actions such as artificial recharge are proposed to mitigate groundwater overexploitation and ensure sustainability.

Summary: Water stress is a major global problem and has already affected more than 400 million hectares of land. The Tafilalet plain in Morocco suffers from soil salinization, which can be detected and predicted using GIS tools and remote sensing. The study found that soil salinization in the Tafilalet oasis is mainly influenced by water stress and drought cycles. Summary: This study evaluated the water quality in the Essaouira basin, finding that most elements met the allowable limits set by the World Health Organization, except for Cl- and SO42- in a few locations. The analysis of water quality indices showed that the water in the study area is suitable for agricultural purposes. Stable isotope analysis revealed that the recharge of these waters is primarily from precipitation of Atlantic origin, with surface water contributing between 32.16% and 70.42% of the recharge to specific aquifers.

Divergent Causes of Terrestrial Water Storage Decline Between Drylands and Humid Regions Globally

Linli An et al.

Summary: Climate variability, climate change, and direct human activities have been identified as the three main driving factors contributing to declines in terrestrial water storage. In humid regions, warming-induced glacier loss and direct human activities are the primary causes of water storage loss, while in non-glacierized humid areas, climate variability leads to regional water gains that counteract synchronous decreases in water storage. Drylands experience enduring and widespread water storage losses due to direct human activities, particularly unsustainable groundwater abstraction.
