Trends in urban air pollution over the last two decades: A global perspective

Pierre Sicard et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess trends in concurrent exposure of the global urban population to O3, PM2.5, and NO2 between 2000 and 2019. The results showed a slight decline in PM2.5 exposure, an increase in NO2 exposure, and an increase in O3 exposure. Urgent actions are needed to monitor and control air pollutants for the sake of public health.

Assessment of meteorological and air quality drivers of elevated ambient ozone in Beijing via machine learning approach

Muhammad Azher Hassan et al.

Summary: In recent years, surface ozone pollution has become the dominant air pollution in China, while particulate matter has decreased. Meteorological factors are the primary influencer of elevated ozone levels, but their importance and heterogeneity of variables remain poorly understood. This study used meteorological factors and air quality parameters to explain and predict ozone levels, revealing that land surface temperature and temperature at 2 meters are the most influential factors, while NO2 is the highest influencing factor from the air quality parameters. Reducing temperature caused by climate change is crucial to effectively control ozone levels in Beijing. Additionally, the study calculated the number of days when ozone concentrations exceeded the WHO standard and the newly proposed peak-season maximum daily 8-hour average guideline for Beijing, with the highest exceedance observed in June.

Long-term changes in northern mid-latitude tropospheric ozone concentrations: Synthesis of two recent analyses

David D. Parrish et al.

Summary: The HTAP and TOAR programs analyzed historical ozone measurements and compared them with recent measurements, revealing a long-term increase in tropospheric ozone concentrations in the northern mid-latitudes during the 20th century. However, the two studies differed in their assessment of the magnitude of this increase, particularly in terms of baseline ozone concentrations.
