Spatial prediction of soil surface properties in an arid region using synthetic soil image and machine learning

Salman Naimi et al.

Summary: This study successfully spatialized soil properties in an arid region of Iran by integrating multisource environmental covariates and machine learning methods. The prediction accuracy of the models varied for different soil properties, and remote sensing data showed promise in enhancing the accuracy of digital soil mapping and reducing soil sampling costs.

The nutritional quality of cereals varies geospatially in Ethiopia and Malawi

D. Gashu et al.

Summary: Micronutrient deficiencies are widespread among people in sub-Saharan Africa due to limited access to micronutrient-rich food sources. Research in Ethiopia and Malawi shows geographical variation in the micronutrient composition of staple cereal grains, influenced by soil and environmental factors. Understanding these geographical effects is crucial for designing interventions to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies.

Soil respiration variation along an altitudinal gradient in the Italian Alps: Disentangling forest structure and temperature effects

Aysan Badraghi et al.

Summary: The study found that soil respiration rates increased with temperature along an elevation gradient in the Southern Alps, with 55-76% of the variability explained by temperature. High elevation sites were rich in soil organic carbon and more sensitive to climate change. The analysis also showed a positive relationship between temperature sensitivity and dominant tree height, suggesting that mature forest ecosystems may be more resilient to environmental changes.

Deep learning-based downscaling of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide using ground-level and satellite observations

Manzhu Yu et al.

Summary: Air quality is a major issue in urban areas, and TROPOMI provides high spatial resolution air quality measurements but is limited by daily overpass and short historical records. A study used deep learning methods to downscale daily NO2 to hourly resolution and generate reliable NO2 estimates.

Modelling and Mapping Total and Bioaccessible Arsenic and Lead in Stoke-on-Trent and Their Relationships with Industry

Joanna Wragg et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the arsenic and lead content in surface soil samples in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, using a geochemical soil survey. Random Forest modeling was used to predict the bioaccessible arsenic and lead based on total element data, indicating anthropogenic causes for the source of these elements.
