3D Lagrangian Particle Tracking in Fluid Mechanics

Andreas Schroeder et al.

Summary: In the past few decades, various particle image-based volumetric flow measurement techniques have been developed to quantitatively access unsteady flow properties in experimental applications. This review focuses on the physical properties and circumstances of 3D particle-based measurements and discusses how to improve reconstruction accuracy, spatial and temporal resolution, and completeness. The 3D Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) technique is highlighted, which allows for determining position, velocity, and acceleration along individual particle tracks in the investigated volume. Furthermore, the dense 3D LPT technique Shake-The-Box has opened up possibilities for characterizing unsteady flows by providing input data for powerful data assimilation techniques.

Turbulent superstructure statistics in a turbulent boundary layer with pressure gradients

Matthew Bross et al.

Summary: Turbulent superstructures in turbulent boundary layers are regions of high-and low-momentum that extend along the streamwise direction and have been shown to interact with near-wall flow structures. Despite their significance in aero-hydrodynamic vehicle design, the structural characteristics of adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer flows are much less studied compared to zero-pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers. This study investigates the three-dimensional dynamics of turbulent superstructures using Lagrangian particle tracking in a wind tunnel.

Lagrangian heat transport in turbulent three-dimensional convection

Philipp P. Vieweg et al.

Summary: This study identifies spatial regions in fully turbulent flows that do not mix effectively with their surroundings and contribute less to heat transport. By analyzing Lagrangian trajectories and clusters, it is found that these regions contribute significantly less to global turbulent heat transport compared to well-mixed regions. Monitoring Nusselt numbers provides a local measure of heat transfer, showing the impact of these identified Lagrangian coherent sets on overall heat transport.

Advanced iterative particle reconstruction for Lagrangian particle tracking

Tobias Jahn et al.

Summary: The proposed novel approaches in iterative particle reconstruction method significantly improve its working range in terms of particle image densities, while maintaining its speed, accuracy, and robustness against image noise. The updated method is easy to implement with low computational cost.
