Urban green innovation efficiency and its influential factors: the Chinese evidence

Bin Liao et al.

Summary: Improving the efficiency of urban green innovation is crucial for achieving green economic transition. This paper constructs a Super-NSBM model to assess and decompose the green innovation efficiency of 284 Chinese cities, and analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics and influential factors. The research findings show that the gap in urban green innovation total efficiency among different regions in China is narrowing, while the spatial differentiation of decomposition efficiency is deepening. Additionally, the study reveals that both the total efficiency and phased efficiency of urban green innovation have significant spillover effects on surrounding areas. Lastly, financial agglomeration, industrial structure, knowledge sharing, economic activity, higher education, opening, and environmental regulations may affect urban green innovation efficiency, and this effect varies across regions.

Does digital finance matter for corporate green investment? Evidence from heavily polluting industries in China

Qian Ding et al.

Does foreign experience of top management affect corporate environmental responsibility? Evidence from China

Wanfu Li et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of top management teams' foreign experience on corporate environmental responsibility (CER) using firm-level data from China during 2008-2019. The results indicate that TMTs' foreign experience significantly promotes CER, leading to increased investment in environmental protection and lower incidence of environmental irregularities. This relationship is stronger for government-controlled firms with better corporate governance and more stringent environmental regulation. The establishment of sustainability committees is found to be an essential channel for TMTs with foreign experience to advance CER.

Bank concentration, urban development and firm access to credit in Latin America

Mahsa Memarian et al.

Summary: We examine the impact of urban characteristics on access to commercial credit. Using a dataset on land development potential in different cities, we consider building density and natural geographic constraints. Our analysis focuses on Latin America, a region where banks play a vital role and real estate collateral is common for loans. Consistent with the information-based hypothesis, we find a positive relationship between bank concentration and firms' credit accessibility, and we demonstrate the importance of city development potential in explaining variations in access to capital.

FinTech and financial stability: Threat or opportunity?

Siti Nurazira Mohd Daud et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between FinTech countries' financial stability in a panel of 63 countries from 2006 to 2017. The empirical results indicate that FinTech promotes financial stability through the channels of artificial intelligence, cloud technology, and data technology. It was also found that bank concentration complements the effect of FinTech on financial stability. Therefore, financial institutions should embrace FinTech and lead the way in evolving and creating an enabling FinTech ecosystem.

How does ownership structure affect corporate environmental responsibility? Evidence from the manufacturing sector in China

Weijia Dong et al.

Summary: The ownership structure has a heterogeneous impact on corporate environmental responsibility (CER) in Chinese manufacturing firms. Government ownership has a positive influence on CER, with central government ownership having a stronger effect than local government ownership. Foreign ownership has a stronger positive effect on CER compared to private ownership, although it is weaker than government ownership. Furthermore, a larger separation of ownership and control inhibits CER in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) but facilitates it in foreign firms.

Industrial agglomeration and firm energy intensity: How important is spatial proximity?

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of spatial agglomeration on manufacturers' energy consumption behavior in China. The findings suggest that refined spatial agglomeration plays a mitigating role in reducing a firm's energy intensity, while agglomeration economies diminish quickly with distance. Heterogeneity analysis reveals diverse patterns of energy efficiency among manufacturers based on ownership and trade status.

Environmental regulations and corporate social responsibility: Evidence from China's real-time air quality monitoring policy

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: China's real-time air quality monitoring policy has a significant impact on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance of publicly listed firms in pilot cities. State-owned enterprises (SOEs) show better environmental responsibility and CSR engagement, while non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs) are negatively affected.

Natural extreme events, government subsidies and corporate environment responsibility: Evidence from China's energy sector

Shuangyan Li

Summary: This study investigates the influence of natural extreme events on corporate environmental responsibility of listed Chinese energy firms, and examines the role of government subsidies in this relationship. The findings indicate that natural extreme events have a positive impact on corporate environmental responsibility, however, higher government subsidies may hinder this positive correlation. The study suggests that government subsidies have a negative effect on environmental responsibility of listed energy firms.

Green finance policy and enterprise energy consumption intensity: Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China

Zhifang Su et al.

Summary: By using the Green Finance Pilot Zones Policy (GFPZP) in China in 2017 as a quasi-natural experiment and applying the difference-in-differences (DID) method, this study investigates the influence of the green finance policy on the energy consumption intensity (ECI) of Chinese A-share listed enterprises. The empirical results show that GFPZP has an energy-saving effect on enterprises, and its impacts on the ECI of enterprises vary across different regions, industries, and enterprise-specific characteristics. The reduction in ECI is achieved through both green innovation and environmental governance channels.

Effects of financial agglomeration on green total factor productivity in Chinese cities: Insights from an empirical spatial Durbin model

Rui Xie et al.

Summary: The study found that financial agglomeration can promote the growth of Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) in cities but significantly reduces GTFP in surrounding areas, with weak spillover effects in each region. Additionally, cities with a population of less than 3 million are associated with higher GTFP.

Mechanical properties of whole-body soft human tissues: a review

Gurpreet Singh et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of soft tissues are crucial for studying human injuries and mitigation strategies. However, limited knowledge on the majority of human tissues hinders research in various applications. This study aims to address these challenges by reviewing literature on the mechanical properties of whole-body soft tissues and introducing non-linear biomechanical models. The gaps identified will aid future biomechanical studies on soft tissue characterization and accurate medical model development.

Summary: Using quasi-experimental method, this study investigates the impact of green credit policy on energy-intensive enterprises. The findings suggest that the Green Credit Guidelines in 2012 had a negative effect on R&D intensity and total factor productivity, while reducing bank credit and increasing trade credit. On the other hand, the Energy Efficiency Credit Guidelines in 2015 increased bank credit and fixed asset investment for enterprises.
