Outcomes associated with acute kidney disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ching-Chun Su et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of 21 studies involving 1,114,012 patients and found that patients with acute kidney disease (AKD) have poorer outcomes, including higher mortality rates, increased risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), and higher incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Additionally, the study found that AKD can also occur in patients without prior acute kidney injury (AKI).

Intraoperative Hypertension Is Associated with Postoperative Acute Kidney Injury after Laparoscopic Surgery

Yongzhong Tang et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that the severity and duration of intraoperative blood pressure are associated with postoperative AKI in laparoscopic surgery. Acute intraoperative hypertension and prolonged exposure to hypertension are independent risk factors for postoperative AKI.

Cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality in primary aldosteronism after adrenalectomy or mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist treatment: a meta-analysis

Sheng-Yin Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the long-term cardiovascular and mortality outcomes of patients with primary aldosteronism treated with adrenalectomy and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA). The results showed that adrenalectomy was associated with a lower incidence of all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events. Adrenalectomy should be considered as the preferred treatment for patients with primary aldosteronism.

Urine N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and plasma proenkephalin are promising biomarkers for early diagnosis of cardiorenal syndrome type 1 in acute decompensated heart failure: a prospective, double-center, observational study in real-world

Hong-Liang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive value of plasma proenkephalin (pPENK) and urine NT-proBNP (uNT-proBNP) in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). The results showed that pPENK and uNT-proBNP/uCr ratio could independently predict the occurrence of CRS-1 and the risk of poor outcomes in ADHF patients.

Comparative accuracy of biomarkers for the prediction of hospital-acquired acute kidney injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Heng-Chih Pan et al.

Summary: This study compared the predictive performance of different biomarkers for acute kidney injury (AKI). The biomarkers containing NGAL showed the best predictive accuracy for the occurrence of AKI, especially in medically treated patients. However, the predictive performance of urinary NGAL was limited in surgical patients, and urinary NGAL/creatinine seemed to be the most accurate biomarkers in these patients. All of the biomarkers had similar predictive performance in critically ill patients.

Role of proenkephalin in the diagnosis of severe and subclinical acute kidney injury during the perioperative period of liver transplantation

Camila Lima et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been frequent and intensive clinical research on early biomarkers of renal injury, with proenkephalin (PENK) being indicated as a promising filtration biomarker. This study found that PENK showed high accuracy and an earlier rise in patients with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) undergoing liver transplantation, suggesting its potential for detecting AKI earlier than serum creatinine.

Improving acute kidney injury diagnostic precision using biomarkers

Denise Hasson et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospitalized patients and has significant morbidity and mortality. Accurate prediction and early identification of AKI is crucial, although current therapies are limited. Clinical biomarkers, such as plasma Cystatin C, urine NGAL, TIMP2, and IGFBP7, have been studied for their potential in predicting AKI. This review focuses on the description and discussion of these clinically available AKI biomarkers and their use in delineating AKI phenotypes.

Summary: The study found that hypertension is an independent risk factor for contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) and can be used for risk stratification. Physicians should pay more attention to the prevention and treatment of patients with hypertension in clinical practice.

Accelerated versus standard initiation of renal replacement therapy for critically ill patients with acute kidney injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis of RCT studies

Heng-Chih Pan et al.

Summary: This study found that accelerated initiation of RRT can reduce the risk of all-cause mortality in surgical ICU patients and those receiving CRRT treatment, as well as increase the chances of eventual dialysis independence in these two subgroups. However, accelerated RRT initiation increases the risk of dialysis dependence in patients treated with non-CRRT methods or with high SOFA scores.
