Exploring Diverse Bioactive Secondary Metabolites from Marine Microorganisms Using Co-Culture Strategy

Xiaolin Li et al.

Summary: The increasing number of unique secondary metabolites from marine microorganisms has attracted the interest of natural product chemists. Cultivating microorganisms in co-culture is a promising strategy for enhancing chemical diversity and discovering novel metabolites. This review focuses on marine-derived co-culture microorganisms, selection and fermentation methods, screening approaches, and the challenges and prospects of co-culture.

Cytotoxic Drimane-Type Sesquiterpenes from Co-Culture of the Marine-Derived Fungi Aspergillus carneus KMM 4638 and Beauveria felina (=Isaria felina) KMM 4639

Olesya Zhuravleva et al.

Summary: Three new sesquiterpenes and nine previously reported compounds were identified from a coculture of two marine-derived fungi. The cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds against breast cancer cells was investigated, and certain compounds were found to induce apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Griseofulvin: An Updated Overview of Old and Current Knowledge

Parisa Aris et al.

Summary: Griseofulvin is an antifungal drug with potential multifunctional applications, including inhibiting cancer cells and hepatitis C virus replication, as well as improving vascular vasodilation and capillary blood flow. It also shows inhibitory effects on SARS-CoV-2 entry and viral replication. These findings suggest the repurposing potentials of griseofulvin in designing novel therapeutic interventions.
