Improving Whole Tomato Transformation for Prostate Health: Benign Prostate Hypertrophy as an Exploratory Model

Pier Giorgio Natali et al.

Summary: It is well known that multiple phytonutrients in their natural state are more effective than single nutrients alone. This study demonstrates that tomatoes, with their comprehensive array of prostate-health-preserving micronutrients, are superior to single-nutrient counterparts in reducing age-related prostate diseases. The researchers developed a tomato food supplement enriched with olive polyphenols, which contains significantly higher levels of cis-lycopene compared to industry-produced tomato products. Animal experiments showed that the supplement, with antioxidant activity comparable to N-acetylcysteine, significantly reduced levels of prostate-cancer-promoting cytokines. Clinical studies on patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia also showed improved urinary symptoms and quality of life with supplement intake. Furthermore, the supplement suppressed the development of prostate cancer in a mouse model and interfered with cancer signaling. It suggests that tomato consumption, especially in high-risk individuals, may delay or prevent age-related prostate diseases.

Composition of discarded Sicilian fruits of Opuntia ficus indica L.: Phenolic content, mineral profile and antioxidant activity in peel, seeds and whole fruit

Maria Bellumori et al.

Summary: Sicily (Italy) is the second largest producer of Opuntia ficus-indica fruits, with a large amount of fruit discarded during selection for the fresh market. This study investigated the composition of these discarded fruits from the main Sicilian productive areas. The peel had the highest values of potassium, calcium, and magnesium, while seventeen phenolic compounds were detected in the peel and whole fruit samples. The chemometric analysis revealed a correlation between mineral and phenolic content with different fruit parts and a significant influence of the productive area.

Phenolic compounds and polysaccharides in the date fruit (Phoenix dactylifera L.): Comparative study on five widely consumed Arabian varieties

Mohamad Khatib et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the polysaccharides and phenolic compounds in various date fruit varieties, including Sukkari, Ajwa, Segae, Barrny, and Khalas. The total phenols in all five varieties ranged from 20 to 50 mg/100 g DW. The extraction procedure used in this study successfully collected two main polysaccharide fractions from each variety. The first fraction was more abundant with a lower swelling capacity and a higher amount of galacturonic acid, while the second fraction was only soluble in alkaline solution and had a lower galacturonic acid content. The study also confirmed the different structures of the two polysaccharide fractions based on their composition in neutral sugars and degrees of methylation and acetylation. The proposed extraction procedure could be utilized for large-scale extraction of date fruit polysaccharides.
