Inter-Subject Variability in the Dependence of Medial-Olivocochlear Reflex Strength on Noise Bandwidth

Donguk Lee et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to quantify the inter-subject variability in the dependence of the medial-olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) on noise bandwidth. The results showed that the dependence of MOCR-induced otoacoustic emission (OAE) magnitude and phase shifts on activator bandwidth could be well approximated using a linear model.

A parametric blueprint for optimum cochlear outer hair cell design

Richard D. Rabbitt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variation of cochlear outer hair cell (OHC) properties along the tonotopic map to optimize electromechanical power conversion. A simple model of a single isolated OHC driving a mechanical load was used for testing. Results indicate the presence of three non-dimensional ratios that optimize power conversion, which should be universal constants independent of frequency and species. These ratios act as control parameters to maximize power output by positioning the OHC operating point on the edge of a dynamic instability.

Olivocochlear efferent effects on perception and behavior

Amanda M. Lauer et al.

Summary: The role of the mammalian auditory olivocochlear efferent system in hearing is still debatable. Its ability to protect against noise exposure is clear, but its primary function in the absence of industrial noise remains controversial. While animal models have shown its role in selective attention, studies in humans have yielded conflicting results. There is a need for further research on other proposed functions of this system.

The role of the medial olivocochlear reflex in psychophysical masking and intensity resolution in humans: a review

Skyler G. Jennings

Summary: This review discusses the putative role of the medial olivocochlear reflex in psychophysical masking and intensity resolution in humans. Studies on estimates of MOC strength and effects of olivocochlear bundle resection are examined to determine the reflex's impact on psychophysical perception. However, current research is inconclusive in definitively confirming or refuting the role of the MOC reflex in masking and intensity resolution.

Distinct forms of synaptic plasticity during ascending vs descending control of medial olivocochlear efferent neurons

Gabriel E. Romero et al.

Summary: Activity in each brain region is influenced by the convergence of ascending and descending axonal pathways, with the medial olivocochlear efferent system playing a critical role in auditory sensitivity control. Different pathways onto brainstem MOC neurons exhibit opposing forms of short-term plasticity, with some showing depression and others showing facilitation. Combining facilitating and depressing inputs enables firing of MOC neurons across a wide dynamic range, highlighting the importance of descending signaling to brainstem nuclei.

The Role of the Medial Olivocochlear Reflex in Acceptable Noise Level in Adults

Abdullah M. Jamos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) and tolerance of background noise, finding a stronger MOCR associated with greater noise tolerance. Participants in the low-ANL group showed significantly larger CM enhancement than those in the moderate-ANL group. There was a significant correlation between ANL and the MOCR effect on the CM.
