Using Artificial Intelligence to classify Jobseekers: The Accuracy-Equity Trade-off

Sam Desiere et al.

Summary: Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in public employment services to improve efficiency, but it can also lead to discrimination, especially against foreign jobseekers. Research shows that at maximum accuracy levels, jobseekers of foreign origin are 2.6 times more likely to be misclassified as 'high-risk' compared to local jobseekers. It is crucial for policymakers and caseworkers to understand the trade-offs of profiling models and consider their limitations in daily operations.

Unemployment, sanctions and mental health: the relationship between benefit sanctions and antidepressant prescribing

Evan Williams

Summary: This study examines the relationship between benefit sanctions and antidepressant prescriptions in the UK, finding that for every 10 additional sanctions, there is an increase in antidepressant prescribing items. This suggests that sanctions may have adverse mental health impacts and broader public expenditure implications, calling for a reassessment of their use within the modern social security system.
