A fully implicit and thermodynamically consistent finite element framework for bone remodeling simulations

Maximilian Bittens et al.

Summary: This work proposes a thermodynamically consistent fully implicit finite element material model for bone remodeling. Bone remodeling is described within the framework of thermodynamics for open systems, resulting in a thermodynamically consistent constitutive law. Similar to elastoplastic material modeling, the constitutive equations are implicitly integrated in time and incorporated into a finite element weak form. A consistent linearization scheme is provided for the subsequent incremental non-linear boundary value problem, leading to an computationally efficient description of bone remodeling.

Techniques for mitigating the checkerboard formation: application in bone remodeling simulations

Jose Eduardo Gubaua et al.

Summary: The checkerboard phenomenon in bone remodeling simulations degrades results quality and has strong mesh dependency. The node-based approach is commonly used but lacks stability, especially for long-time simulations. This study discusses techniques for mitigating the checkerboard formation and achieving bone characterization, with the application of nodal average technique and introduction of standard density variation parameter. Smoothing techniques help stabilize behavior and allow for physiological density distribution.

Bone remodeling: an operational process ensuring survival and bone mechanical competence

Simona Bolamperti et al.

Summary: Bone remodeling is a continuous cellular process that replaces old and damaged bone with new bone on the same surface. Recent research has shown that all bone cells participate in bone remodeling by interacting with their progenitors, other cells, and bone matrix constituents at different differentiation stages.
