Childbearing among Polish migrant women and their descendants in Sweden: an origin-destination country approach

Jonathan Lindstrom et al.

Summary: This paper examines the childbearing behavior of Polish migrant women and their descendants in Sweden, and provides empirical evidence on the relevance of socialization, selection, and adaptation hypotheses in explaining their fertility patterns. The results show that the fertility behavior of Polish stayers and first-generation migrants differs from that of Swedish natives and second-generation migrants, supporting the socialization hypothesis. The study also finds partial support for the selection hypothesis, suggesting that education, cohort, and marital status are factors influencing migration decisions. Additionally, the fertility behavior of the second generation indicates adaptation to the Swedish context.
