Multitracer approach towards an improved understanding of shallow hard rock aquifers and a more sustainable groundwater management, case of Yaounde, Cameroon

E. J. Fongoh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shallow groundwater in Yaounde, Central Africa, and emphasizes the importance of considering geomorphological settings in evaluating the availability and contamination of these resources. The results show that the hydrogeology and urban occupation of the area impact water exploitation and contamination. The proposed conceptual scheme can serve as a guide for the development and management of local wells in hard rock systems of Africa.

A Review on the Application of Isotopic Techniques to Trace Groundwater Pollution Sources within Developing Countries

Abdul Aziz Sankoh et al.

Summary: Due to a lack of efficient solid waste management systems, groundwater in most developing countries is contaminated and poses significant environmental health risks. This review paper provides guidelines on the application of isotopic techniques to trace groundwater pollution sources in these countries, highlighting the importance of combining hydrochemical and isotope techniques.

Shallow Quaternary groundwater in the Lake Chad basin is resilient to climate change but requires sustainable management strategy: Results of isotopic investigation

A. Mahamat Nour et al.

Summary: The unconfined Quaternary aquifer within the Lake Chad Basin serves as a vital water resource, resilient to climate change and anthropogenic impacts. Stable isotope studies reveal active recharge processes in the aquifer, with some areas exhibiting more static behavior.

Isotopic composition of precipitation and groundwater onshore of the Rio del Rey Basin, southwest Cameroon: local meteoric lines and recharge

Engome R. Wotany et al.

Summary: The study on the link between rainfall and groundwater recharge in the Rio del Rey Basin in Cameroon reveals the differences in stable isotopes during dry and wet seasons and the influences of precipitation sources and evaporation on isotopic composition. The isotopic similarity between groundwater and June-August rains suggests significant recharge during this period.

Summary: The study in sub-Saharan Africa reveals a high recharge rate of 600-760 mm/year in the Mio-Pliocene aquifer in Douala, with increased mineralization controlled by anthropogenic activities. The research on chemical components in groundwater can contribute to enhancing groundwater resources management.

Review: Hydrogeology of weathered crystalline/hard-rock aquifers-guidelines for the operational survey and management of their groundwater resources

Patrick Lachassagne et al.

Summary: Hard rocks or crystalline rocks make up the basement of all continents and are exposed to deep weathering processes, forming weathering profiles where hard-rock aquifers develop mainly within the first 100 meters below ground. The permeable stratiform fractured layer (SFL) within these weathering profiles is a key component in controlling the groundwater resources in hard rocks, with its fracture network development induced by mineral swelling stress. Further weathering below the SFL also contributes to hydraulic conductivity within preexisting geological discontinuities.

Mohamed Rafaa Trigui et al.

Summary: The study aims to improve the understanding of the hydrogeological structure of the Complex Terminal Aquifer in Kebili basin, evaluate groundwater quality, and develop an integrated hydrogeological conceptual model. The research revealed very low recharge and flow rates in CTAK groundwater, with 51% of samples showing poor quality for drinking purposes and only 6% suitable for irrigation.
