Response of Sulfonated Polystyrene Melts to Nonlinear Elongation Flows

Supun S. Mohottalalage et al.

Summary: Ionizable polymers form dynamic networks controlled by ionic interactions and van der Waals forces. Molecular dynamics simulations of a model ionizable polymer provide insight into its nonlinear response. Increasing elongational flow rate leads to an initial elastic response, followed by strain hardening, stress overshoot, and eventually strain thinning. Flow-driven ionic assembly dynamics control the system's response.

Extensional rheology of linear and branched polymer melts in fast converging flows

Yu-Ho Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, the extensional rheology of various linear and branched polymer melts is investigated using entry flow measurements and 15:1 axisymmetric contraction flow simulations. The results indicate that there are three distinct power-law regimes in the log-log plots of entrance pressure drop versus wall shear stress, and the intermediate regime is observed after a critical stress associated with chain stretching effects. The proposed Trouton ratio model captures the progressive shift of the kink to higher strain rates with increasing temperature, and the GNF-X model shows good predictions of the nonlinear extensional response and flow patterns of both linear and branched polymers.

The Elasticity of Polymer Melts and Solutions in Shear and Extension Flows

Andrey V. V. Subbotin et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the role of elasticity in the shearing and extension flow modes of polymeric viscoelastic liquids. Experimental data analysis reveals that energy losses in these flows are determined by the Deborah and Weissenberg numbers. These criteria not only govern the abnormally high entrance effects and mechanical losses in short capillaries, but also determine the threshold for flow instability caused by the liquid-to-solid transition. Additionally, the Weissenberg number determines whether deformation occurs as flow or elastic strain in extension. The stability of a free jet in extension depends on both the viscoelastic properties of the polymeric substance and external driving forces, such as gravity and surface tension. An analysis of different force combinations on the shape of the stretched jet is presented. The concept of the role of elasticity in the deformation of polymeric liquids is crucial for polymer processing.

Effects of Ionic Group Distribution on the Structure and Dynamics of Amorphous Polymer Melts

Supun S. Mohottalalage et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of the distribution of ionizable groups along the polymer backbone on cluster characteristics and the resulting impacts on the structure and dynamics of amorphous polymers were investigated using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The distribution of ionic groups was found to affect the shape, distribution, and internal packing of the clusters, as well as the number of unique chains participating in each cluster, thus influencing the structure and dynamics of the polymers. The mobility of the polymer segments was found to be affected by not only the number and size of the clusters, but also by the number of polymer chains associated with clusters.

Stretching of Bombyx mori Silk Protein in Flow

Charley Schaefer et al.

Summary: The flow-induced self-assembly of entangled Bombyx mori silk proteins is hypothesized to be aided by the registration of aligned protein chains using intermolecular interacting sticky patches. Despite a clear correlation length of the stickers in the direction of the flow, there is a very broad distribution of protein-chain stretch, suggesting the registration of proteins is not directly coupled to the applied strain but may be a slow statistical process. This qualitative prediction seems to be consistent with the large strains required to induce gelation in rheological measurements under constant shear in the long time scales.

Brittle-to-Ductile Transition of Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers

Shuang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the brittle-to-ductile transition of sulfonated polystyrene ionomers with different counterions. It was found that a flowable region existed at sufficiently low Wi, independent of Wi(R), while a brittle-to-ductile transition of the ionomer melt occurred at higher Wi, above a critical value of Wi(R). The study suggests that to achieve ductility during rapid elongational flow, Rouse-type motions should be slow relative to the rate of ion-dissociation.
