Number feature distortion modulates cue-based retrieval in reading

Himanshu Yadav et al.

Summary: This article investigates the cognitive constraints that determine number agreement computation in sentence comprehension. The traditional theoretical proposals fail to account for the full spectrum of number agreement patterns observed in published studies. By implementing seven computational models using 17 benchmark datasets from four languages, the research finds that a hybrid model achieves the best fit in terms of number agreement.

Summary: This study tested for real-time number attraction misrepresentations in comprehension, finding no online evidence but offline evidence supporting the notion that memory search for associative features may differ from processes involved in forming dependencies in discourse comprehension.

Processing agreement in Hindi: When agreement feeds attraction

Sakshi Bhatia et al.

Summary: This study investigates agreement processing in Hindi and finds attraction effects in both subject agreement and object agreement contexts. However, the role, case, or syntactic prominence of the distractor NP does not modulate attraction. Instead, attraction occurs when the distractor itself is an agreement controller.

Modeling Misretrieval and Feature Substitution in Agreement Attraction: A Computational Evaluation

Dario Paape et al.

Summary: This study presents computational modeling results on number attraction effects in Eastern Armenian, finding that an encoding-based model is more suitable for explaining the data compared to a retrieval-based model. A novel methodological contribution of the study is the use of comprehension questions with open-ended responses to investigate both misinterpretation of the number feature of the subject phrase and misassignment of the thematic subject role of the verb simultaneously. The study found evidence for both types of misinterpretation, sometimes within the same trial, but the specific error patterns in the data do not fully align with any previously proposed model.

Encoding interference effects support self-organized sentence processing

Garrett Smith et al.

Summary: According to cue-based retrieval theories of sentence comprehension, the syntactic dependency between a verb and the subject is susceptible to interference from other noun phrases in the sentence; a self-organized sentence processing model provides a more parsimonious explanation on encoding interference effects; self-organization approach reduces parsing to feature match optimization, offering a unified method for similarity-based interference in sentence comprehension.
