Co-composting poultry carcasses with wood-based, distillers' grain and cow manure biochar to increase core compost temperatures and reduce leachate's COD

Yuchuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study tested the co-composting effect of commercially available biochars with full-size poultry carcasses and found that adding wood-based and cow manure biochar can increase compost temperature and meet the specifications for eliminating avian influenza viruses. Wood-based biochar also reduces the chemical oxygen demand of leachate without significantly affecting ammonia emissions and sodium content.

EVALUATION OF DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS FOR ANIMAL MORTALITY COMPOSTING SYSTEMS

Tiago Costa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the physical parameters and airflow characteristics of three commonly used cover materials at different moisture levels for designing actively aerated swine mortality composting systems. The results showed that air-filled porosity and permeability decreased with increasing bulk density and moisture content.

Testing the plastic-wrapped composting system to dispose of swine mortalities during an animal disease outbreak

Tiago Costa et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the effectiveness of the plastic-wrapped composting system in disposing swine mortalities and confirmed its ability to eliminate the spread of airborne pathogens through aeration ducts. Different cover materials and aeration methods affected the system's performance, but after a 7-week composting period, all pathogens were inactivated.

Biochar-amended poultry mortality composting to increase compost temperatures, reduce ammonia emissions, and decrease leachate?s chemical oxygen demand

Yuchuan Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that adding biochar to poultry mortality composting can increase temperature, reduce ammonia emissions, decrease organic content of leachate, and enhance nutrient content. A minimum of 5% biochar addition is recommended to improve the poultry mortality composting process.

ALKALINE HYDROLYSIS OF SWINE MORTALITIES AND USING HYDROLYSATES TO GROW LETTUCE HYDROPONICALLY

N. Akdeniz et al.

Summary: Animal mortality management is crucial for livestock production, and choosing the right method is essential for preventing disease spread and ensuring sustainability. The study demonstrated that alkaline hydrolysis of piglet mortalities at ambient conditions was effective, with the resulting hydrolysates suitable for growing lettuce hydroponically, showing increased yields and quality compared to commercial fertilizers.
