Nitrogen availability in biochar-based fertilizers depending on activation treatment and nitrogen source

Raill Castejon-del Pino et al.

Summary: Different activation and N-doping treatments were used to produce biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs) with increased N concentration and slow N release. The activation of low-temperature biochars with nitric acid was the most effective treatment, leading to new surface carboxylic groups that facilitated N enrichment. Urea treatment resulted in BBFs with the highest N content, while hydrogen peroxide activation only allowed a limited increase in N concentration. The presence of water-soluble, hydrolyzable, and non-hydrolyzable N fractions in the BBFs suggests their potential as slow-release fertilizers.

Co-incorporation of hydrotalcite and starch into biochar-based fertilizers for the synthesis of slow-release fertilizers with improved water retention

Jiawei Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a new type of slow-release fertilizer with high water retention, named HS-BCF, was fabricated by incorporating hydrotalcite and starch into traditional biochar-based compound fertilizers (BCF). The results showed that the incorporation of hydrotalcite and starch into BCF significantly increased the soil water-retention ratio and reduced the leaching of nutrients. Kinetic analysis revealed that the release of nutrients from HS-BCF was attributed to the coupling of the diffusion-controlled and relaxation-controlled mechanism. The pot experiments demonstrated that HS-BCF had higher N-P-K utilization efficiencies compared to BCF due to better synchronization between nutrient release and plant uptake.
