Zwitterionic surfactant as an additive for efficient electrophoretic separation of easily absorbed rhodamine dyes on plastic microchips

Jiali Qian et al.

Summary: Plastic microchips are advantageous in terms of easy fabrication and low cost, but their surface properties often require modification for electrophoretic separation. Additionally, the short length and relatively larger inner diameters of microchannels on typical microchips may affect the separation process. In this study, a zwitterionic surfactant, HDAPS, was used as a multifunctional additive to improve surface properties and enhance separation performance without the need for viscous polymeric additives. Experimental results showed effective inhibition of analyte adsorption and stable negative surface charge with HDAPS. Rapid separation of rhodamines was achieved within 90 seconds using the proposed system, with high theoretical plate numbers and low deviations in retention time and peak area. The system was verified by detecting rhodamines in eyeshadow and wolfberry. (c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Simultaneous removal of aqueous same ionic type heavy metals and dyes by a magnetic chitosan/polyethyleneimine embedded hydrophobic sodium alginate composite: Performance, interaction and mechanism

Xiangchu Zeng et al.

Summary: Heavy metals and azo dyes pose significant threats to aquatic systems and human health. A magnetic chitosan/polyethyleneimine embedded hydrophobic sodium alginate composite (MCPS) was developed for the simultaneous removal of these pollutants. In mono-polluted systems, the optimal pH values and adsorption capacities were determined for Cr(VI), MO, Cu(II), and MB. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model and the isotherm data fit the Langmuir model. In binary-polluted systems, MCPS showed simultaneous adsorption for Cr(VI)-MO and Cu(II)-MB, but the presence of heavy metals suppressed the removal of azo dyes. The pollutants could be effectively adsorbed and desorbed from MCPS by adjusting the pH, allowing for recyclability. The removal mechanism was elucidated using FT-IR, EDS, and XPS.

Oxidized sodium alginate cross-linked calcium alginate/antarctic krill protein composite fiber for improving strength and water resistance

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) was successfully prepared by the oxidation of sodium alginate (SA) using sodium periodate. The OSA was used as a crosslinker to crosslink calcium alginate (CA)/Antarctic krill protein (AKP) composite fibers, resulting in the formation of OSA-co-CA/AKP composite fibers with multiple crosslinking networks. The analysis of FT-IR, XRD, SEM, DSC, TGA, and a single fiber strength meter revealed that the composite fibers possessed a multi-network structure of covalent bonding-ionic complexation-hydrogen bonding. The inclusion of OSA enhanced the thermal stability, crystallinity, and mechanical properties of the composite fibers. Moreover, the Cell Counting Kit-8 cytotoxicity test confirmed the good biocompatibility of the composite fibers, indicating their potential as biomedical materials.
