Dynamics of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and glomalin in the rhizosphere of Gymnocarpos przewalskii in Northwest Desert, China

Lili Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the seasonal dynamics of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and glomalin associated with Gymnocarpos przewalskii in two locations in Gansu Province, northwest China. Results showed significant variations in AMF colonization and spore densities among seasons and locations, with positive correlations to most edaphic factors. Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) significantly contributed to the local soil carbon pool and was influenced by soil properties, season, and location.

Host and Tissue Affiliations of Culturable Endophytic Fungi Associated with Xerophytic Plants in the Desert Region of Northwest China

Yiling Zuo et al.

Summary: Endophytic fungi isolated from drought-stressed desert shrubs in Northwest China were found to provide adaptive benefits to their hosts. The colonization rate of root was lower, but the root-endophytic fungi showed higher diversity than stem and leaf. Endophytic fungi exhibited preferences for host and tissue, with tissue explaining more variation than plant species.

Relationship of root dark septate endophytes and soil factors to plant species and seasonal variation in extremely arid desert in Northwest China

Yiling Zuo et al.

Summary: Investigations on host affiliations, seasonal variation, and physiological response to drought tolerance of dark septate endophytes (DSE) in extremely arid desert environments can help explain the adaptive mechanisms of these endophytes in desert ecosystems. This study found that colonization and species diversity of DSE were significantly influenced by sampled plants and seasons. Additionally, the composition of metabolites of DSE strains varied significantly due to levels of drought stress and DSE identity.

Plant association with dark septate endophytes: When the going gets tough (and stressful), the tough fungi get going

Monika Malicka et al.

Summary: Dark septate endophytes (DSEs) are a group of fungi that colonize the roots of plants in stressful environments, and they possess adaptation strategies to tolerate heavy metal contamination, drought, and salinity. They form mutualistic relationships with plants, improving plant growth and physiology. Additionally, DSEs can improve soil quality and aid in phytoremediation of contaminated soils.

Season-dependence of soil extracellular enzyme activities in aPinus koraiensisforest on Changbai Mountain

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: Changbai Mountain is home to a virgin Korean pine forest with soil enzyme activity and stoichiometry being reliable indicators of microbial energy and nutrient utilization. The study found that seasonal changes had a greater impact on soil enzyme activity than elevation, with available phosphorus and pH being key factors affecting soil enzyme activity.

Combined inoculation with dark septate endophytes and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi: synergistic or competitive growth effects on maize?

Linlin Xie et al.

Summary: The dual inoculation of maize with AMF and DSE from other plant species had positive effects on plant growth, with the outcome depending on the density of DSE. Low density DSE had lesser impact on plant growth compared to medium or high densities, and AMF promoted above-ground growth more than DSE, while high density DSE promoted root development more than AMF. The combination of AMF and DSE could lead to synergistic growth effects at low DSE density and competitive effects at medium to high DSE densities.

Indole-3-Acetic Acid Is Synthesized by the Endophyte Cyanodermella asteris via a Tryptophan-Dependent and -Independent Way and Mediates the Interaction with a Non-Host Plant

Linda Jahn et al.

Summary: This study investigates a possible IAA biosynthesis pathway in Cyanodermella asteris, identifying its ability to synthesize IAA without precursors and through a Trp-independent pathway. The uptake of fungal IAA into Arabidopsis thaliana affects growth phenotypes, with an influx inhibitor altering parameters and partially rescuing the root phenotype in an influx carrier mutation.

Evidence for a fungal loop in shrublands

Niko Carvajal Janke et al.

Summary: This study explores the functional role of fungal loops in nutrient translocation in a North American shrubland ecosystem. It finds that nutrient transfer may be delayed following rainfall, with moss-dominated biocrusts playing a significant role in these fungal-mediated pathways.

Temporal and Spatial Dynamics of Dark Septate Endophytes in the Roots of Lycium ruthenicum in the Desert Region of Northwest China

Li Han et al.

Summary: The study found that colonization and species diversity of dark septate endophytes in the roots of Lycium ruthenicum in northwest China are influenced by seasonality and sampling sites. Microsclerotial colonization is affected by seasons, while hyphal colonization and species diversity are influenced by sampling sites. Soil factors play a significant role in predicting DSE colonization and species diversity.

Microbial potential for denitrification in the hyperarid Atacama Desert soils

Di Wu et al.

Summary: The research shows that despite being one of the driest regions in the world, the soils of the Atacama Desert still have the capability to support microbial growth, including denitrification. Extreme weather events and aridity have relatively minor impacts on soil microbial communities, but could potentially lead to nitrate loss and increased N2O emissions in the region.

Fungal Endophytic Community and Diversity Associated with Desert Shrubs Driven by Plant Identity and Organ Differentiation in Extremely Arid Desert Ecosystem

Yiling Zuo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the endophytic fungal microbiome in root, stem, and leaf organs associated with five xerophyte shrubs in an extremely arid desert in Northwest China. The research revealed that shrub species strongly influence the niche-based processes of endophytic fungi, with the root fungal community showing higher variability and remarkable differentiation of community composition among plant species. The co-occurrence network demonstrated the coexistence of fungal endophytes in the arid desert, with Pleosporales members being the most common keystone species in the root fungal network.
