Performance Evaluation of Hybrid Battery-Supercapacitor-Based Energy Storage Systems for Urban-Driven Electric Vehicles

Eiman ElGhanam et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an optimal sizing and energy management strategy of a hierarchical hybrid energy storage system (H-HESS) to boost the performance of energy management systems (EMSs) of electric vehicles (EVs). It acknowledges the higher power densities of supercapacitors (SCs) compared to Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and uses SCs for urban driving cycles, while the battery recharges the depleted SCs.

Full Current-Type Control-Based Hybrid Energy Storage System

Jiahui Ren et al.

Summary: This paper presents a supercapacitor/battery semi-active hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with a full current-type control strategy for pulse-operated power systems. The HESS consists of batteries, supercapacitors, and a bidirectional buck-boost converter. The proposed power distribution module based on hysteresis control theory enables fast compensation of the supercapacitors to load power pulses. The results show that the HESS performs well in terms of dynamic response, weight, and energy utilization coefficient (EUC).

Battery-Supercapacitor Energy Storage Systems for Electrical Vehicles: A Review

Diana Lemian et al.

Summary: The current worldwide energy directives aim to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. While electric vehicles have no direct emissions, their production process emits more greenhouse gas and consumes more energy compared to traditional internal combustion vehicles. To mitigate the environmental impact, electric vehicles should be used for as long as possible. Hybrid energy storage systems combining batteries and supercapacitors appear to be the most suitable solution for extending battery lifespan.
