Selective removal of copper from heavy-metals-containing acidic solution by a mechanochemical reduction with zero-valent silicon

Kai Li et al.

Summary: Dealing with industrial wastewater containing heavy metals, such as copper, is a challenge. Selective removal and recovery of valuable metals from acidic solutions are crucial for resource supply and environmental purification. Researchers proposed a new approach using ball milling with zero-valent silicon (ZVS) in CuSO4 solution and multi-metal ion solutions to convert Cu2+ into Cu2O. Experimental parameters including milling time and Si to Cu ratio were found to significantly impact the reaction, resulting in the removal of 97.32% Cu2+ from the solution. Even at high sulfuric acid concentrations, a high copper removal percentage of 82.57% was achieved. The reduction reaction by zero-valent silicon only occurred on Cu2+ in sulfate solutions containing other heavy metal ions. This research demonstrates the potential feasibility of using waste silicon from solar energy devices in the future.

Mechanochemical remediation of lindane-contaminated soils assisted by CaO: Performance, mechanism and overall assessment

Zhenguo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the remediation performance, degradation mechanism and overall assessment of lindane-contaminated soil using a mechanochemical method assisted by CaO. Experimental results showed that the mechanical activation of CaO to produce free electrons (e-) and the alkalinity of Ca(OH)2 were the main reasons for the degradation of lindane in soil. Dechlorination reactions, alkaline hydrolysis, hydrogenolysis, and carbonization were the main degradation pathways of lindane. The mechanochemical method with CaO was also effective in degrading other pollutants and the soil properties and toxicity were assessed after remediation.

Mechanochemical treatment of hexachlorobenzene-contaminated soil with additives

Xue Li et al.

Summary: The use of mechanochemistry was investigated for the remediation of hexachlorobenzene-contaminated soil. Various additives were studied to explore their effect on the degradation of hexachlorobenzene in soil. The combination of albite and ferric oxide (Fe3O4) was found to achieve the best performance in the degradation of hexachlorobenzene.

Mechanochemical degradation of hexachlorobenzene with a combined additive of SiC and Fe

Maofeng Nie et al.

Summary: The addition of iron powder to Mechanochemical treatment (MCT) can prevent the production of toxic product CCl4 and accelerate the degradation of hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The combined additive of SiC and Fe can further optimize the reaction by maintaining the stability of SiC while enhancing the degradation process.

Carbon matrix of biochar from biomass modeling components facilitates electron transfer from zero-valent iron to Cr(VI)

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that ZVI supported by biochar derived from cellulose, hemicellulose, and their binary mixture showed better Cr(VI) removal capacity. The higher ordered and graphitic carbon structure was responsible for this improved performance, facilitating electron transfer and reduction of Cr(VI).

Mechanically activated zero-valent silicon by coating silica to decolorize Acid Red 73 dye

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: A novel composite material consisting of microscale ZVS and silica was successfully prepared in this study, which showed good performance in decolorization of AR73 dye. The results suggest that Si samples from solar cells after termination of service life could serve as raw materials for active reductive agents, offering potential alternative for environmental remediation.

Atomic layer deposition of palladium coated TiO2/Si nanopillars: ToF-SIMS, AES and XPS characterization study

Igor Iatsunskyi et al.

Summary: The study synthesized Pd/TiO2/Si nanopillars by metal-assisted chemical etching and atomic layer deposition, and investigated the surface using various characterization techniques. It was found that the Pd coating decreased the concentration of photoactive defects that could reduce the photoelectrochemical efficiency of TiO2.

Improvement of electron transfer efficiency during denitrification process by Fe-Pd/multi-walled carbon nanotubes: Possessed redox characteristics and secreted endogenous electron mediator

Zeyu Wang et al.

Summary: Nanomaterials in contact with microbial membranes can accelerate denitrification processes by establishing a connection with the internal electron transfer chain of microorganisms. This study found that Pd-Fe/MWCNTs promote extracellular electron transfer in Alcaligenes sp.TB. The excellent electron exchange capacity of Pd-Fe/MWCNTs and the secretion of PN contribute to the occurrence of DEET process and electron transfer.
