Progressive tectonic evolution from crustal shortening to mid-lower crustal expansion in the southeast Tibetan Plateau: A synthesis of structural and thermochronological insights

Guihong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the Cenozoic deformation history and the underpinning mechanism of the southeast Tibetan Plateau through the compilation of structural and geo-thermochronological data. The findings suggest two main phases of deformation, late Eocene-early Miocene crustal shortening along major fault zones and late Miocene deformation and exhumation both within and away from the major faults. The study proposes a new progressive deformation model, which explains the deformation history and regional crustal thickening.

Comparing methods for calculating channel steepness index

Adam G. G. Smith et al.

Summary: Channel steepness index, derived from digital elevation models, is a powerful tool for interpreting tectonic processes. However, the choice of calculation method can greatly influence the values and findings of a study. It is important for authors to acknowledge the methodology used to ensure contextualization and reproducibility of results.

Ongoing westward migration of drainage divides in eastern Tibet, quantified from topographic analysis

Chao Zhou et al.

Summary: Landscape evolution is controlled by tectonic strain, bedrock lithology, and climatic conditions, and is expressed in the spatial and temporal variations of river channel networks. This study developed a modified method to calculate the transient direction and rate of drainage divide migration from topography. The application of this method in eastern Tibet revealed a consistent westward migration pattern with quantified rates. This provides a quantitative insight into the ongoing river network re-organization in the region.

Caution on determining divide migration from cross-divide contrast in χ

Yunpeng Wu et al.

Summary: The landscapes on Earth are shaped by the interaction of tectonics and erosion processes. A geomorphologic index called chi has been proposed to estimate the dynamic state of drainage systems. However, factors such as tectonic activities, rock erodibility, and precipitation differences can affect the interpretation of the chi value. Our numerical modelling results suggest that the migration direction of the drainage divide is related to cross-divide contrast in erosion rate rather than chi values. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using this index in landscape analysis.

Constraining tectonic uplift and advection from the main drainage divide of a mountain belt

Chuanqi He et al.

Summary: One of the most conspicuous features of a mountain belt is the main drainage divide, which can be used to extract tectonic information and increases in mountain asymmetry with increasing uplift gradient and advection velocity. The authors constrain the tectonic uplift and advection of a mountain belt from the location and migration direction of its main drainage divide.

Tectonic Controls on Surface Erosion Rates in the Longmen Shan, Eastern Tibet

Summary: The research on denudation rates in the southern Longmen Shan suggests spatial variations and a potentially close-to-exhumational-steady-state condition. High rates of exhumation and denudation are predominantly localized in the hanging walls of major thrust faults in this region.

Evolution of eastern Tibetan river systems is driven by the indentation of India

Yi Chen et al.

Summary: The geomorphological analyses of river systems in the eastern Tibetan Plateau suggest that the indentation of India plays a primary role in shaping the large-scale configuration of river systems, while lower-order river networks are influenced by fluvial self-organization processes.
