Shear performance of a novel non-metallic cross-laminated timber wall-to-wall connection using double-dovetail mortise-tenon joint

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of a novel double-dovetail mortise-tenon joint and compares it with metal connectors. The study finds that the stiffness, maximum load, and ductility of the joint exhibit specific patterns with respect to a certain ratio. Additionally, the joint demonstrates better energy dissipation capability under seismic conditions.

Mechanical properties of mortise-tenon joints reinforced by self-tapping screws with different insertion methods

Tianxiao Yin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the reinforcement of mortise-tenon (MT) joints with different self-tapping screw (STS) insertion methods. The results show that horizontally inserted STS can significantly reduce tenon pull-out and improve the load-carrying capacity of the joints. However, inclined insertion of STS provides higher stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity, but inferior load-carrying capacity compared to horizontally inserted STS reinforcement. This paper provides data for selecting different reinforcement methods for MT joints with STS, according to different engineering requirements.

Shear performance of tongue-and-groove joints for CLT

Tianxiao Yin et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on tongue-and-groove (T&G) and half-lap (HL) joints for 5-layer crosslaminated timber (CLT) connected with self-tapping screws (STS). The results showed that T&G joints had higher load-carrying capacity, stiffness, and ductility compared to HL joints. Additionally, STS with 8mm diameter had better performance in load-carrying capacity, initial stiffness, and ductility than those with 6mm diameter. The study provides fundamental basis for the potential engineering application of CLT panels connected with T&G joints.

Mechanical performance of pre-fabricated metal dovetail connections for Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) structures

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: A prefabricated metal dovetail connection inspired by traditional mortise and tenon joints was proposed for CLT structures, providing quick assembly for orthogonally adjacent CLT wall panels. Monotonic and cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate the withdrawal, push-down, and shear behavior of the connection, and load resisting parameters were derived and compared. The connection strength was predicted analytically, and overstrength factors of 1.86 and 1.54 were evaluated under push-down and shear loading scenarios.

Embodied energy and GHG emissions of residential multi-storey timber buildings by height-A case with structural connectors and mechanical fasteners

Iva Lukic et al.

Summary: The study shows that the embodied impacts per floor decrease as the building height increases, but the contributions of different building elements change with the variation in the number of storeys. The building envelope and load-bearing timber structure play critical roles in environmental impact assessments.

Experimental evaluation of angle bracket connections in CLT structures under in- and out-of-plane lateral loading

Saeed Rezvani et al.

Summary: The study on CLT wall-to-floor connections with angle brackets showed that small diameter fasteners are more desirable in terms of failure modes, load-bearing capacity, and stiffness. The specimens exhibited considerable ductile performance under both uplift and in-plane shear loads due to combinations of yielding of brackets and yielding or pull-out of screws. However, connections loaded under out-of-plane tension may fail in splitting of CLT panels. Additionally, fully-threaded screws led to higher strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity but less ductility compared to partially-threaded screws in angle bracket connections.

Characterization of the out-of-plane behavior of CLT panel connections

Rafael A. Salgado et al.

Summary: Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) has been extensively studied under seismic load conditions and shown good performance, but its potential as a resilient alternative for natural hazard events primarily engaging out-of-plane response hasn't been explored. Lack of knowledge on CLT panel connections under out-of-plane load conditions poses a significant barrier in adopting CLT structures for resilient wood buildings. Study aims to advance understanding and behavior characterization of CLT panel connections under out-of-plane-induced load conditions.

Experimental and numerical study of mortise-tenon joints reinforced with innovative friction damper

Jianyang Xue et al.

Summary: The new friction damper proposed in this study improves the seismic performance of mortise-tenon joints by reducing pullout, increasing bearing capacity and initial stiffness, minimizing strength and stiffness degradation, and enhancing energy dissipation capacity. Increasing the friction coefficients of friction pads and clamping force values can effectively enhance the seismic performance of the joints. Optimal parameters for reinforcement include a friction coefficient of 0.4 for friction pads and a pre-tension strain of 0.03 in the bolt. High deformation capacities are observed in the reinforced joints, and finite element modeling is used to further understand their mechanical behaviors.

Design space exploration for comparing embodied carbon in tall timber structural systems

Isabelle Hens et al.

Summary: This paper presents a parametric framework for early-stage tall timber design, allowing designers to compare the embodied carbon of different geometries in two mass timber structural systems. The study finds that the post-beam-panel system has higher embodied carbon levels, with floors being a significant contributor. By utilizing this framework, designers can make informed decisions on structural systems and geometries to optimize both aesthetic and embodied carbon performance.

Structural performance of CLT shear connections with castellations and angle brackets

Justin R. Brown et al.

Summary: The study found that traditional carpentry joints such as mortise and tenon castellated joints can provide higher shear strength and stiffness compared to connections using mechanical connectors/fasteners, especially in modern mass timber construction. A simplified component-based analytical model was developed to predict the strength of the castellated joints loaded parallel and perpendicular to grain, showing that these joints can offer an effective connection type with high shear strength and stiffness for CLT structures.
