Bilateral Lung Transplantation With Donor Positive for COVID-19 Infection on Bronchoalveolar Lavage: A Case Report

Ryan L. Goetz et al.

Summary: Initial experience with lung transplant from COVID-19-positive donors had disappointing results, but improvements in preventative and therapeutic measures have been made. This case describes a successful lung transplant from a donor who tested positive for COVID-19. The recipient was fully vaccinated and remained seronegative post-transplant.

SARS-CoV-2 vaccine antibody response and breakthrough infections in transplant recipients

Benedict Vanlerberghe et al.

Summary: This observational study investigated the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and breakthrough infections in transplant recipients. It found significant variations in antibody response rates and rates of severe infections among different transplant types, which were modulated by specific risk factors. These findings highlight the importance of tailored COVID-19 prevention measures for transplant recipients.

Indoor air surveillance and factors associated with respiratory pathogen detection in community settings in Belgium

Joren Raymenants et al.

Summary: The impact of indoor climate, human behaviour, ventilation, and air filtration on respiratory pathogen detection and concentration in indoor air is poorly understood. In this study, 341 indoor air samples from 21 community settings in Belgium were tested for 29 respiratory pathogens. The results showed that pathogen detection and concentration varied significantly and were influenced by CO2 levels, natural ventilation, and portable air filtration. The findings highlight the importance of ventilation and air filtration in reducing transmission risk.

Visualising SARS-CoV-2 infection of the lung in deceased COVID-19 patients

Jan Van Slambrouck et al.

Summary: A study introduces a methodology for visualizing the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in the lungs at single-cell resolution. The method utilizes fluorescence staining and confocal imaging to observe viral replication in histological sections. This technique can be valuable for studying SARS-CoV-2 variants and other respiratory viruses.

Summary: This study analyzed the performance of three different rapid antigen tests in a clinical setting, showing varying specificities and sensitivities which did not entirely meet all expectations. Therefore, careful evaluation is needed when considering their benefits for specific testing strategies and settings.

Donor to recipient transmission of SARS-CoV-2 by lung transplantation despite negative donor upper respiratory tract testing

Daniel R. Kaul et al.

Summary: This case report highlights a proven transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from a lung donor to recipient, with sequence analysis confirming the donor origin of infection in both the recipient and a healthcare worker. It emphasizes the importance of testing lower respiratory tract specimens from potential lung donors and enhancing personal protective equipment for healthcare workers involved in lung procurement and transplantation.

Melissa Querrey et al.

Summary: This study reported a successful intentional transplant of lungs from a donor with previous COVID-19 infection to a recipient suffering from COVID-19 induced ARDS and pulmonary fibrosis. Tissue analysis confirmed the donated lungs were negative for SARS-CoV-2 and revealed markers of COVID-19 associated lung fibrosis in the recipient's lung tissues.
