Functional Peptides for Plant Disease Control

Emilio Montesinos

Summary: Plant disease control requires new approaches to combat current, emerging, and re-emerging diseases and adapt to climate change and pesticide restrictions. Functional peptides offer novel mechanisms to fight plant pathogens but face challenges in stability, formulation, toxicology, and cost.

Strategies for the enhancement of nail plate permeation of drugs to treat onychomycosis

Aditya K. Gupta et al.

Summary: Onychomycosis, caused by various types of fungi, has a global prevalence of 5.5% and requires long treatment periods with high relapse rates. Oral antifungals are commonly used but have limitations, while topical antifungals are safer but less effective. The primary challenge of topical treatment is the permeation of drugs through the nail plate barrier. This article reviews different strategies to improve drug permeation, including physical, nanoparticle-based, formulation-based, mechanical, and chemical methods.

Onychomycosis: Old and New

Narges Maskan Bermudez et al.

Summary: Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection of the nail that causes discoloration and thickening. Oral agents are the preferred treatment, especially for mild toenail infections. Terbinafine and itraconazole are approved oral therapies, but fluconazole is commonly used off-label. However, cure rates are limited and terbinafine resistance is increasing globally. This review discusses current and potential oral treatment options for onychomycosis.

The antifungal activity of caspofungin in combination with antifungals or non-antifungals against Candida species in vitro and in clinical therapy

Shan Su et al.

Summary: The review highlights the importance of combination therapy with caspofungin in treating refractory Candida infections and the need for further research on its efficacy. Additionally, novel compounds with potential antifungal activities show synergistic interactions with caspofungin, indicating promising directions for future studies on combating Candida species.
