Photocatalytic Metal Hydride Hydrogen Atom Transfer Mediated Allene Functionalization by Cobalt and Titanium Dual Catalysis

Huaipu Yan et al.

Summary: Co-porphines were discovered to be highly efficient MHAT catalysts for chemoselective allene functionalization under photoirradiation with a loading of only 0.01 mol %. The combination of photo Co-MHAT and Ti catalysis enabled successful carbonyl allylation, providing expedient access to beta-functionalized homoallylic alcohols in over 100 examples with exceptional regio- and diastereoselectivity. Mechanism studies supported the key role of selectively transferring hydrogen atoms from cobalt hydride to allenes and generating allyl radicals in the catalytic cycle.

Photo- and Electrochemical Cobalt Catalysed Hydrogen Atom Transfer for the Hydrofunctionalisation of Alkenes

Samikshan Jana et al.

Summary: Catalytic hydrogen atom transfer from metal-hydrides to alkenes allows the use of feedstock olefins as alkyl radical precursors. This process's chemoselectivity makes it an attractive synthetic tool and has been widely used in the synthesis of complex molecules. However, the reactivity is limited by compatibility with the conditions for forming the key metal-hydride species. Now, through the merger with photocatalysis or electrochemistry, milder methods are emerging that can unlock new reactivity and expand these methods in unprecedented directions.

Photocatalytic Deuterium Atom Transfer Deuteration of Electron-Deficient Alkenes with High Functional Group Tolerance

Akihiko Suzuki et al.

Summary: Due to its mild reaction conditions and unique chemoselectivity, hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) hydrogenation is an indispensable method for the synthesis of complex molecules. In this study, a protocol for the photocatalytic deuteration of electron-deficient alkenes using deuterium atom transfer (DAT) was developed. The method tolerates various synthetically useful functional groups and allows for late-stage deuteration, enabling the synthesis of deuterated amino acids and donepezil-d(2). This work demonstrates the potential of DAT chemistry as an alternative method for preparing deuterium-containing molecules.

Photoinduced Cobalt Catalysis for the Reductive Coupling of Pyridines and Dienes Enabled by Paired Single-Electron Transfer

Jingyang Qin et al.

Summary: A mild and selective hydropyridylation method for dienes was reported, allowing for traceless coupling of dienes on a wide range of pyridine substrates. The method showed good functional group tolerance, making it suitable for late-stage functionalization. The mechanistic pathway involved non-reversible hydrogen atom transfer, resulting in a reaction that was uniquely selective for dienes in the presence of other olefins.

Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

Photoredox-Catalyzed C-H Functionalization Reactions

Natalie Holmberg-Douglas et al.

Summary: The fields of C-H functionalization and photoredox catalysis have gained significant interest and utility in various scientific disciplines. This review focuses on the use of photoredox catalysis in C-H functionalization reactions, highlighting both inorganic/organometallic and organic-based photoredox catalytic systems. The subdivision by reaction class (sp(2) or sp(3) C-H functionalization) provides perspective and tactical strategies for synthetic applications.

Organophotoredox/Ni-Cocatalyzed Allylation of Allenes: Regio- and Diastereoselective Access to Homoallylic Alcohols

Hui Xie et al.

Summary: A dual organophotoredox/nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling reaction between allenes and aldehydes has been developed for the synthesis of anti-homoallylic alcohols. The reaction showed high regioselectivities (>20:1), diastereoselectivities (up to >20:1), and yields (up to 91%). The reaction proceeds through a key pi-allylnickel intermediate formed by the insertion of allenes with a Ni-H intermediate. Additionally, gamma,gamma-disubstituted homoallylic alcohols with a quaternary stereocenter can also be prepared.

Light-Driven Cobalt Hydride Catalyzed Hydroarylation of Styrenes

Enrico Bergamaschi et al.

Summary: We present a synthesis strategy for 1,1-diarylalkanes and triarylalkanes using light as a trigger. This approach allows for selective coupling of CoIII-H species and (hetero)arene radicals, resulting in the formation of Markovnikov hydroarylation products under mild conditions without the need for precious metals. Highly congested quaternary centers, including those with three different aryl groups, can be constructed.

Formal total synthesis of dankasterone B

Shengzhen Deng et al.

Summary: An efficient and enantioselective synthesis of an architecturally unusual ergostane-type steroid, dankasterone B, is described. The cis-decalin skeleton of the steroid is established through an intramolecular metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (MHAT) reaction, while the 13(14 -> 8)abeo-ergostane skeleton is constructed via a radical rearrangement.

Pengquan Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the assembly of the cis-decalin framework through radical cyclization initiated by metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (MHAT), and its application in asymmetric synthesis of target compounds. The MHAT-based approach allows for position-selective C-H oxygenation and interconversion between different natural products through radical rearrangement and biomimetic reactions.
