Tinkering to Solve Problems That Emerge During Digital Fabrication: Introduction of a New Problem-Solving Model

The purpose of this article is to create a new problem-solving model by using data from previous studies, highlighting the importance of tinkering in how students solve problems during digital fabrication in schools.
The digital age in which we live requires students to be able to solve problems in technology-rich learning environments; however, this skill needs to be better developed in traditional schools. With the growing popularity of Makerspaces in Canadian schools, young people can develop problem-solving skills while working on digital fabrication projects. Nevertheless, how students solve problems in these environments remains to be seen. While many problem-solving models exist, there is an absence of problem-solving models that address how students solve problems that emerge during digital fabrication. Through two of our previous studies on Makerspaces of five New Brunswick schools, we observed the problem-solving process, which brought forth tinkering as an essential phase of the problem-solving process. The purpose of this article is to clarify how students solve problems that emerge during digital fabrication in schools by using data from our previous studies to create a new problem-solving model that highlights the importance of tinkering. L'ere numerique dans laquelle nous vivons exige des eleves qu'ils soient capables de resoudre des problemes dans des contextes d'apprentissage riches en technologie, toutefois cette competence n'est pas formee dans les ecoles traditionnelles. Avec la popularite croissante des laboratoires ouverts dans les ecoles canadiennes, les jeunes peuvent developper des competences en resolution de problemes tout en travaillant sur des projets de fabrication numerique. Neanmoins, la maniere dont les eleves solutionnent les problemes dans ces contextes n'est pas claire. Bien qu'il existe de nombreux modeles de resolution de problemes, il semble qu'il n'y en ait pas qui traitent de la maniere dont les eleves resolvent les problemes qui surviennent lors de la fabrication numerique. En nous basant sur deux de nos etudes anterieures portant sur les laboratoires ouverts de cinq ecoles du Nouveau-Brunswick, nous avons pu observer le processus de resolution de problemes qui a fait ressortir l'exploration creative comme une phase essentielle du processus de resolution de problemes. L'objectif de cet article est de clarifier la facon dont les eleves solutionnent les problemes qui surviennent dans le contexte de la fabrication numerique en comparant les donnees de nos etudes precedentes avec les modeles de resolution de problemes actuels afin d'elaborer un nouveau modele de resolution de problemes qui met en evidence l'importance de l'exploration creative.
