Sources of anti-immigrant sentiments in Western democracies: A contextual approach

Summary: The surprising electoral success of nativist parties in Western democracies in the last decade can be attributed to the insufficient understanding of the various triggers of anti-immigrant sentiments. Progress has been made in comprehending the complex sources of intolerant attitudes, such as realistic and symbolic threat, individual and group characteristics, and biological and cultural determinants. Additionally, considering regional specificity is crucial for future research. Recognizing the complexities of anti-immigrant sentiments should lead to more sophisticated diversity management strategies.

A global index of anti-immigrant xenophobia: associations with cultural dimensions, national well-being, and economic indicators in 151 nations

Summary: The Gallup World Poll was used to develop a global index of anti-immigrant xenophobia, which found stronger associations of xenophobia with cultural and well-being variables compared to economic and social indicators. Globalization was not significantly correlated with xenophobia. The new global index provides an up-to-date assessment of national xenophobia with broader coverage than previous indices.

The effect of perceived threat on human rights: A meta-analysis

Xenophobia in the time of pandemic: othering, anti-Asian attitudes, and COVID-19

Summary: As COVID-19 cases increased worldwide, conservative elites in the US linked the pandemic to Asians, activating anti-Asian attitudes. This study analyzed the relationship between attitudes towards Asian Americans, xenophobia, concern about contracting the virus, and various behavioral outcomes and policy attitudes. The findings suggest that anti-Asian attitudes were associated with concern about the virus, xenophobic behaviors, and policy preferences.

Factors affecting attitudes toward migrants-An evolutionary approach

Summary: The study found that men tend to have more restrictive attitudes towards migration than women, with this attitude becoming stronger with age and particularly if they have children at home. Development of prejudice against immigrants and ethnic minorities in adolescence: A systematic review with meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
