Intertwined fates? Members switching between niche and mainstream parties

Summary: Little attention has been given to members leaving parties to join other parties. This study examines the factors behind members of the UK Green Party leaving to support the Labour Party. The results show that members motivated by social justice are more likely to leave, while those concerned about the environment are less likely to leave. Niche parties can attract members interested in mainstream party issues, but they are more likely to leave when the mainstream party changes its stance.
