Germination traits explain the success of direct seeding restoration in the seasonal tropics of Brazil

Pedro Dias Laumann et al.

Summary: Direct seeding is a major method for active restoration of tropical forests and savannas. Seed traits such as seed size and shape can affect the success of seedling emergence after direct seeding. Understanding the germination traits can help improve the success of seedling establishment.

Hydraulic properties characterization of undisturbed soil cores from upward infiltration measurements

D. Moret-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Estimating the van Genuchten parameters and saturated hydraulic conductivity of undisturbed soil samples is crucial for water flow simulations. The study proposed a method to optimize the parameters and applied it to different soil cores, detecting significant differences in hydraulic properties. The relationship between theoretical and optimized values was found to be robust.

Seed germination responses to soil hydraulic conductivity and polyethylene glycol (PEG) osmotic solutions

Manuel E. Camacho et al.

Summary: Our study compared seed germination of four plant species in PEG and four soils with different textures under different water potentials, finding significant differences in total germination under different conditions. We found that soil water potential is more directly related to germination rate, and Kh provides a more robust description of germination rate across species and soils.
