Late Cenozoic environmental changes drove the diversification of a weevil genus endemic to the Cape Floristic Region

Noemie M-C Hevin et al.

Summary: The Cape Floristic Region in South Africa is a hotspot of biodiversity with unique plant and animal species. The apterous weevil genus Phlyctinus diversified in the late Miocene and its diversification was driven by geographic speciation. Sea level oscillations and topography likely played important roles in promoting species diversification.

Pest categorisation of Phlyctinus callosus

Claude Bragard et al.

Summary: The EFSA Panel on Plant Health assessed the pest categorisation of Phlyctinus callosus, a polyphagous pest native to South Africa that has spread to Australia and New Zealand, among other places. While natural spread in the EU would be limited, faster spread could occur through the transportation of host plants. Various phytosanitary measures can be employed to inhibit the entry of this potential Union quarantine pest.
