Orderly decoupled dynamics modulation in nanoporous BiVO4 photoanodes for solar water splitting

Xiaotian Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, an orderly decoupled modulation strategy is proposed to improve the overall efficiency of photoelectrochemical water oxidation by tradeoff among multistage dynamics. The concept is demonstrated on a nanoporous BiVO4 photoanode, showing a significant increase in the product of three dynamics efficiencies by adjusting film thickness and activating the surface.

Bipolarized intrinsic faradaic layer on a semiconductor surface under illumination

Mengfan Xue et al.

Summary: Luo et al. discovered the photo-induced bipolarity characteristic of a faradaic layer on the semiconductor surface and proposed electrochemical potential as a simplified descriptor of the faradaic layer. They also found that the potential window of the faradaic layer is located outside the forbidden band and that the bipolarity or mono-polarity of the surface layer on a semiconductor depends on the applied potential. These findings provide new insights into the charge transfer process at the semiconductor/liquid interface for solar energy utilization.

2D Bismuthene as a Functional Interlayer between BiVO4 and NiFeOOH for Enhanced Oxygen-Evolution Photoanodes

Junyi Cui et al.

Summary: BiVO4 has attracted attention as oxygen-evolution photoanodes, but its performance is hindered by electron-hole recombination. In this study, partially oxidized two-dimensional bismuthene is developed as an interlayer between BiVO4 and NiFeOOH co-catalyst to improve the performance of the photoanode. The bismuthene increases the density of oxygen vacancies, promotes the oxygen evolution reaction, and enhances charge extraction, leading to a significantly improved photocurrent.

Dynamics of Photoexcited Small Polarons in Transition-Metal Oxides

Lili Zhang et al.

Summary: The dynamics of small polarons induced by photoexcitation in rutile TiO2 were investigated using ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation, revealing significant differences in polaron formation, migration, and quenching at different temperatures. At low temperature, the polaron is localized on a single Ti atom and quenches slowly, while at increased temperature, thermal phonon excitation stimulates polaron hopping and delocalization, leading to fast polaron quenching within 200 ps.

Nitrogen-incorporation activates NiFeOx catalysts for efficiently boosting oxygen evolution activity and stability of BiVO4 photoanodes

Beibei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that nitrogen-doping can efficiently activate NiFeOx catalysts to enhance the oxygen evolution activity and stability of BiVO4 photoanodes. The electron-enriched Ni sites donated electrons to V sites of BiVO4, while the Fe sites promoted the oxygen-evolution activity. This work provides a promising strategy for optimizing OER catalysts and constructing highly efficient and stable PEC water splitting devices.
