Armin Dadras Eslamlou et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for life cycle sustainability has led to a significant interest in non-destructive evaluation (NDE) for minimizing defects, waste, and improving maintenance in civil construction materials. Magnetic Sensors (MSs) have gained attention due to their low cost, non-contact data collection, and high sensitivity for damage detection under external stimuli. However, MSs are still in their early stages of development and face various challenges. This paper summarizes recent advancements in MSs, discusses their principles, compares their characteristics, highlights the research challenges, and critically reviews their applications and advantages in civil engineering.

Electromagnetic pulse-induced acoustic testing enables reliable evaluation of debonding between rebar and concret

Xinwu Zhou et al.

Summary: An EPAT method was investigated for evaluating debonding between rebar and concrete. Debonding specimens were prepared by wrapping polystyrene foam around a rebar. Elastic wave signals were collected using an acoustic emission sensor. EPAT was demonstrated to be useful for non-destructive evaluation of debonding by comparing the differences in signal reach time between specimens with and without debonding. Finite element simulations also validated the reliability of EPAT for examining debonding in reinforced concrete.

Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Structures with Magnetic Method and ACO (Amplitude-Correlation-Offset) Decomposition

Pawel Karol Frankowski et al.

Summary: The magnetic method is a fast, cheap, and straightforward nondestructive testing technique for conducting area tests of reinforced concrete structures. This paper presents a new approach to simultaneously identify rebars' diameter, alloy class, and thickness of the concrete cover using the magnetic method. ACO decomposition, a new attributes extraction method, is proposed to identify object parameters even without a suitable training database. Tests conducted demonstrate that the ACO method accurately reflects the waveform shape and limits the number of attributes to three or fewer, making the identification of three parameters more straightforward and improving the separation between results for different classes. This article provides measurement results and details the entire identification process.

Non-Destructive and Quantitative Evaluation of Rebar Corrosion by a Vibro-Doppler Radar Method

Takashi Miwa

Summary: This paper proposes a vibro-Doppler radar (VDR) measurement method to quantitatively evaluate rebar corrosion by measuring the vibration ability of the rebar forcibly vibrated in concrete by an excitation coil. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the VDR method in evaluating rebar corrosion, with minimal impact from concrete moisture. By monitoring rebar vibration displacement in test pieces and comparing it to corrosion loss, it is shown that rebar vibration displacement increases with corrosion loss before corrosion cracks appear on the concrete surface.
