Development of a Nickel-Catalyzed N-N Coupling for the Synthesis of Hydrazides

Jay P. Barbor et al.

Summary: A nickel-catalyzed N-N cross-coupling reaction was developed for the synthesis of hydrazides. O-benzoylated hydroxamates efficiently reacted with a variety of aryl and aliphatic amines, achieving hydrazide formation with up to 81% yield. Experimental evidence suggested the involvement of electrophilic Ni-stabilized acyl nitrenoids and the formation of a Ni(I) catalyst through silane-mediated reduction. This study represents the first intermolecular N-N coupling compatible with secondary aliphatic amines.

Synthesis of N-acyl sulfenamides via copper catalysis and their use as S-sulfenylating reagents of thiols

Ziqian Bai et al.

Summary: This study reports a method for the synthesis of N-acyl sulfenamides via copper-catalyzed S-amidation of thiols with dioxazolones. This method is efficient, convenient, and broadly applicable. The resulting N-acetyl sulfenamides can be used as highly effective S-sulfenylation reagents and enable the synthesis of sterically demanding disulfides that are difficult to prepare by other means.

Hydroxylamine-Derived Reagent as a Dual Oxidant and Amino Group Donor for the Iron-Catalyzed Preparation of Unprotected Sulfinamides from Thiols

Sayanti Chatterjee et al.

Summary: An iron catalyzed reaction has been developed for the selective transformation of thiols to sulfinamides by a direct transfer of -O and free -NH2 groups. It operates under mild conditions, exhibits broad functional group tolerance, and does not require precious metal catalysts or additional oxidants. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest the role of the alcoholic solvent as an oxygen atom donor.

Highly Robust Iron Catalyst System for Intramolecular C(sp3)-H Amidation Leading to γ-Lactams

Jeonguk Kweon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of an iron catalyst system for intramolecular C-H amidation to synthesize gamma-lactams from dioxazolone precursors. The reaction, catalyzed by (phthalocyanine)(FeCl)-Cl-III, proceeds through a stepwise radical pathway involving hydrogen atom abstraction and radical rebound, leading to extremely high turnover numbers of up to 47,000 under mild and aerobic conditions. The high turnover numbers and air-compatibility are rationalized based on experimental and computational mechanistic studies.

Mechanism-Guided Development of Transition-Metal-Catalyzed C-N Bond-Forming Reactions Using Dioxazolones as the Versatile Amidating Source

Seung Youn Hong et al.

Summary: Catalytic reactions constructing carbon-nitrogen bonds are important in synthetic and medicinal chemistry due to the prevalence of nitrogen-containing motifs in natural products and drugs. C-H amination offers a more efficient approach by directly converting C-H bonds into C-N bonds, bypassing the need for prefunctionalized substrates. The development of novel catalytic platforms utilizing metal-nitrenoids has expanded the scope of C-N bond-forming reactions and enabled the synthesis of diverse compounds.

Cross-dehydrogenative N-N couplings

Alexis Tabey et al.

Summary: The high electronegativity of nitrogen presents challenges for N-N bond forming cross-coupling reactions, especially in an intermolecular fashion. Dehydrogenative N-N coupling reactions are advantageous in terms of step and atom economy, but require careful design of an oxidizing system to avoid unwanted side reactions. Despite the importance of N-N bonds in organic chemistry, only a few intermolecular hetero N-N cross-dehydrogenative couplings exist, highlighting the need for further research in this area.
