Ancient Mitogenomes Reveal the Origins and Genetic Structure of the Neolithic Shimao Population in Northern China

Jiayang Xue et al.

Summary: This study sequenced 172 complete mitochondrial genomes from individuals related to the Shimao culture and Taosi culture in the Middle Yellow River basin. The results showed close genetic connections between the populations inhabiting Shimao City and the earlier Yangshao culture population in northern Shaanxi Province. The Shimao-related populations also had the closest maternal affinity with the contemporaneous Taosi populations and shared more affinity with present-day northern Han populations.

Interdisciplinary study on dietary complexity in Central China during the Longshan Period (4.5-3.8 kaBP): New isotopic evidence from Wadian and Haojiatai, Henan Province

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study integrates stable isotope analyses from human and animal bones with multiproxy data to interpret the social conditions behind dietary complexity during the Longshan Period in Central China. The feeding strategies of cattle and sheep from Western Asia were successfully adapted to local millet farming subsistence regimes, indicating the coexistence of different human dietary groups with diversified subsistence strategies such as millet farming, rice farming, and hunter-gathering. This dietary complexity reflects the cultural interactions that saw the mixing of populations with diversified cultural backgrounds in Central China during the Longshan Period.
