High mechanical properties of covalently functionalized carbon fiber and polypropylene composites by enhanced interfacial adhesion derived from rationally designed polymer compatibilizers

Heun Young Seo et al.

Summary: By using compatibilizer-functionalized carbon fiber, the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites was significantly improved, leading to enhanced mechanical properties, specifically a substantial increase in tensile strength and modulus. This resulted in the composite exhibiting ideal mechanical properties in comparison to reported polypropylene composites, particularly in the commercially available region for automotive components.

Optimizing lignocellulosic nanofibril dimensions and morphology by mechanical refining for enhanced adhesion

Peter V. Kelly et al.

Summary: The use of lignocellulosic nanofibrils as adhesive binders in structural composites is a growing field due to their renewable, recyclable, and strong properties. Understanding the adhesion mechanisms of cellulose nanofibrils is crucial for optimizing performance and production costs, with strong adhesion linked to decreased fiber size and increased relative fibril surface area. The addition of suspension stabilizers can improve adhesion of lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils to levels comparable to pure cellulose nanofibrils.

Sustainable production process of mechanically prepared nanocellulose from hardwood and softwood: A comparative investigation of refining energy consumption at laboratory and pilot scale

Wriju Kargupta et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of fiber source, mechanical treatment mode, and scale on energy consumption for nanocellulose production. Results showed that disc refining of hardwood is the most energy-efficient method. A novel quality index (Q) was proposed to demonstrate the production of high-quality nanocellulose.

Recycled Cardboard Containers as a Low Energy Source for Cellulose Nanofibrils and Their Use in Poly(L-lactide) Nanocomposites

Katie Copenhaver et al.

Summary: Recycled cardboard, known as old corrugated cardboard (OCC), has been investigated as an alternative source of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) in this study, showing promising results for its low cost, low energy consumption, and enhanced reinforcement capabilities in polymer matrices. Pairing with biobased poly(L-lactide) (PLLA), OCC-derived CNF proves to be an attractive option for sustainable, high performance nanocomposites.

Functional Nanocellulose, Alginate and Chitosan Nanocomposites Designed as Active Film Packaging Materials

Gregor Lavric et al.

Summary: The study found that polysaccharide-based films with added CNC are the most suitable for packaging purposes, and better dispersal of nanocellulose in chitosan than in alginate was observed. By adding CNC, the hydrophobicity of chitosan and alginate films increased, and chitosan with 3% CNC showed the highest contact angle and 15% lower moisture absorption compared to pure chitosan.
