Multi-objective optimization of concentrated solar power plants from an energy-water-environment nexus perspective under distinct climatic conditions-Part B: Environ-economic analysis

Momina Ahmad et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to include environmental impact in optimization of concentrated solar power plants. Numerical investigations are conducted to compare the performance of solar towers and parabolic trough collectors at different climatic zones. Techno-economic analysis is used to quantify water usage and compare the environmental impact of concentrated solar power plants with natural gas-based power plants. Multi-objective 'balanced' solutions are proposed, which offer low levelized cost of electricity, high electricity generation, and significant reduction in environmental impact. Semi-arid climates are found suitable for concentrated solar power plant installation.

Green hydrogen and sustainable development-A social LCA perspective highlighting social hotspots and geopolitical implications of the future hydrogen economy

Malik Sajawal Akhtar et al.

Summary: A social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) was conducted on green hydrogen production through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy in seven countries. The results indicate that South Africa poses the highest risk to social indicators, while other countries can reduce risk by manufacturing key equipment domestically. Compared to conventional hydrogen, green hydrogen performs poorly in various social indicators due to the complexity of the supply chain and outsourcing from countries with poor working conditions.

Summary: This paper examines the production of green hydrogen via water electrolysis and its conversion into alternative fuels such as methane, methanol, and ammonia. Four different power-to-fuel solutions are analyzed and compared from technical and economic perspectives. The study calculates the global process efficiency, storage capacity, annual costs, and production cost of the different fuels. Sensitivity analysis is employed to investigate the impact of various parameters on the economic viability of the processes. Map plots are developed to illustrate fuel production costs based on different renewable energy sources and availability.
