Influence of cover crops at the four spheres: A review of ecosystem services, potential barriers, and future directions for North America

Laura L. Van Eerd et al.

Summary: Cover crops have been studied for a long time, but the understanding of their complex interactions with the Earth's systems is relatively recent. Recent research has focused on the benefits of cover crops on soil carbon sequestration, emissions reduction, erosion control, weed control, and soil microbial communities. This knowledge is crucial for sustainable agriculture. However, barriers to adoption include termination methods, crop rotation design, additional costs, and uncertain economic returns.

Integrating Diverse Cover Crops for Fallow Replacement in a Subtropical Dryland: Implications on Subsequent Cash Crop Yield, Grain Quality, and Gross Margins

Ismail Ibrahim Garba et al.

Summary: Integrating cover cropping into crop-fallow rotation can mitigate negative productivity and sustainability challenges associated with conventional fallow practices. However, the adoption of cover crops in water-limited environments has been limited by potential soil water and nitrogen costs and resulting yield penalties.

Response of Soil Nematode Community Structure and Function to Monocultures of Pumpkin and Melon

Dan Zhao et al.

Summary: The monoculture of vegetables affects the soil nematode community structure and vegetable yields. Pumpkin and melon monoculture decrease the relative abundance of bacterivores but increase the relative abundance of plant parasites, leading to degraded soil food webs.

Enrichment in biodiversity and maturation of the soil food web under conservation agriculture is associated with suppression of rice-parasitic nematodes

Anne-Sophie Masson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of conservation agriculture (CA) practices on plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) and rhizosphere microbial communities in a Cambodian field. The results demonstrated that CA practices significantly reduced the abundance of PPNs in the roots, improved soil quality, and enriched microbial communities in the rhizosphere.

Ecosystem services of cover crops: a research roadmap

Jay Ram Lamichhane et al.

Summary: Crops that provide ecosystem services beyond crop production are gaining attention and interest. Cover crops, grown either as the sole crop or in mixtures, contribute to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals by providing multiple ecosystem services. However, it is not known to what extent the ecosystem services provided by cover crops are affected by interactions between genotype, environment, and management. Understanding these interactions can help maximize the ecosystem services of cover crops while minimizing their impact on ecosystems. Therefore, a paradigm shift in defining, managing, and utilizing cover crops is proposed.

Fallow replacement cover crops impact soil water and nitrogen dynamics in a semi-arid sub-tropical environment

Ismail Ibrahim Garba et al.

Summary: Cover crops have the potential to improve soil water and mineral nitrogen management in dryland cropping systems. In this study, grass-legume mixtures were found to be the most effective in terms of biomass production, nitrogen retention, and water preservation during fallow. However, the overall efficiency of fallow was higher in conventional systems. Careful selection of cover crop functional traits in mixtures is crucial to enhance soil water and nitrogen management in semi-arid drylands.

Effects of plant species diversity on nematode community composition and diversity in a long-term biodiversity experiment

Peter Dietrich et al.

Summary: This study showed that plant species richness significantly impacts soil nematode communities, mainly regulated by resource quantity and quality. Bacterial-feeding, omnivorous, and predatory nematodes thrived in species-rich plant communities, while plant-feeding nematodes accumulated in species-poor plant communities, potentially contributing to the positive plant diversity-productivity relationship.

Summary: The study shows that in conventionally managed European fields, the proportion of time with crop cover during the past ten-year rotation has a greater impact than crop diversity on soil microbial diversity, soil multifunctionality, and crop yield.
