How eluents define proteomic fingerprinting of protein corona on nanoparticles

Liangjia Qiu et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles have great potential in biomedicine due to their unique physical and chemical properties. When nanoparticles enter biological fluids, they interact with proteins and form a protein corona. Understanding and characterizing the protein corona is crucial for the clinical translation of nanomedicine.

Cholesterol modulates the physiological response to nanoparticles by changing the composition of protein corona

Huan Tang et al.

Summary: The metabolome profile is an underexplored factor that affects the efficacy and safety of nanomedicines; using cholesterol as an example, this study demonstrates the importance of developing personalized nanomedicines by targeting disease-related metabolites. Cholesterol levels can impact the generation of the protein corona, leading to enhanced inflammatory responses in macrophages and increased cellular uptake in hepatocytes. In vivo biodistribution assays show that hypercholesterolemic mice have altered tissue delivery patterns of nanoparticles. This research highlights the need to consider the metabolome profile in developing nanomedicines for improved targeting efficacy and safety.

Second Harmonic Scattering Reveals Ion-Specific Effects at the SiO2 and TiO2 Nanoparticle/Aqueous Interface

Marie Bischoff et al.

Summary: Ion-specific effects play a crucial role in controlling colloidal system stability and regulating interfacial processes. This study quantified the interfacial water orientation and electrostatic surface potential around colloidal particles in the presence of various salts, revealing specific preferences for inner- vs outer-sphere adsorption of different cations. Molecular dynamics simulations supported the experimental findings, contributing to a molecular-level understanding of ion-specific effects around colloidal nanoparticles.

The protein corona hampers the transcytosis of transferrin-modified nanoparticles through blood-brain barrier and attenuates their targeting ability to brain tumor

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: The modification of targeting ligands on nanoparticles is expected to enhance therapeutic delivery to diseased tissues, but the protein corona formed when exposed to the blood stream can hinder this process. Research shows that the protein corona has different impacts on receptor targeting, lysosomal escape, and protein transcytosis in BBB. After crossing the BBB, transferrin retains its targeting specificity towards brain tumor cells.

Environmental dimensions of the protein corona

Korin E. Wheeler et al.

Summary: This review discusses the importance of dynamic protein corona composition in mediating the fate of nanomaterials in the environment, as well as future steps in eco-corona studies. The formation of the biomolecular coating on nanomaterials entering the environment, known as the eco-corona, is still an emerging area of research. Proteins within the eco-corona play a crucial role in defining the biological identity of nanomaterials and their impacts on the environment.

Freundlich Isotherm: An Adsorption Model Complete Framework

Michael Vigdorowitsch et al.

Summary: The majority of modern studies focused on interpreting experimental data based on the Freundlich isotherm overlook the importance of analytically continuing the data obtained for low and moderate adsorbate concentration/pressure regions within the Freundlich adsorption model. This study proposes a framework and algorithm-driven method to comprehensively analyze experimental data that comply with the Freundlich adsorption model, providing valuable extended information about the adsorption process. Three sets of experimental data were processed and presented according to the developed framework, illustrating the method's effectiveness.

Species-dependent eco-corona dictates the aggregation of black phosphorus nanosheets: the role of protein and calcium

Linfeng Wei et al.

Summary: There are promising applications for black phosphorus in biomedical and agricultural fields, with root exudates playing a crucial role in stabilizing BP nanosheets and inhibiting their aggregation. Among the root exudates tested, soybean exudates showed the strongest aggregation inhibition effects. It was found that macromolecules in the exudates directly stabilized the BPNSs, highlighting the important role of eco-coronas in regulating the behavior of nanoparticles in crop root zones.
