Detection of Sub-20 μm Microplastic Particles by Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Comparison with Raman Spectroscopy

Ahmed M. Othman et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a type of particulate water contaminants that have raised concerns due to their potential environmental and health effects. This study aims to quickly gather information about the population of identical microplastic particles, including their chemical nature and size below 20 μm, through a single spectrum acquisition. The researchers built a compact setup for attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy measurements on the same sample, and found that ATR-FTIR was more sensitive to particles of 6 μm in size, while Raman spectroscopy showed the opposite trend. The study also used theoretical modeling to explain the ripples observed in the spectra, which can serve as an indicator of microparticle dimension.

Potential of a Miniature Spectral Analyzer for District-Scale Monitoring of Multiple Gaseous Air Pollutants

Alaa Fathy et al.

Summary: A low-cost multi-parameter gas analyzer capable of monitoring multiple gaseous pollutants simultaneously was introduced. It is a small spectral sensor based on a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) gas analyzer. The sensor was successfully deployed in a district-scale climatic chamber and accurately measured carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O).

Pectin Microspheres: Synthesis Methods, Properties, and Their Multidisciplinary Applications

Keila Gutierrez-Alvarado et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in the use of cleaner technologies and biopolymers as raw materials. Pectin, which is commonly extracted from fruit shells like apples or citrus fruits, has various commercial applications. The structuring of biopolymer microspheres using pectin has been widely cited to enhance its activity. The technique of polymer structuring has gained popularity in recent decades due to its diverse applications in science and technology. The most commonly used method for synthesizing microspheres is emulsion, known for its reproducibility and simplicity. Drug delivery and industrial protection are among the most cited applications, while there are still possibilities for expanding its use in the environmental field.

Pollen analysis using multispectral imaging flow cytometry and deep learning

Susanne Dunker et al.

Summary: Pollen identification and quantification are essential tasks in various fields like pollination, paleobotany, allergology, honey analysis, and forensics. This study introduces a novel method using multispectral imaging flow cytometry and deep learning, which proved to deliver high accuracy and fast measurement for pollen analysis. By training a convolutional neural network classifier on a large dataset, the approach can accurately identify and differentiate pollen from different plant species, even those that are difficult to distinguish using traditional microscopy.

Radius and roundness measurement of micro spheres based on a set of AFM surface scans

Erik Oertel et al.

Summary: A new method based on AFM surface scans and stitching algorithm was proposed and investigated for measuring a ruby sphere with a diameter of 150 μm. While the technique allows for high-resolution measurements of micro spheres, the measurement procedure is mainly influenced by the shape of the AFM tip at the moment.

Scattering of evanescent wave generated by total reflection

Huayong Zhang et al.

Summary: An exact semi-analytical solution to a scattering problem of evanescent wave incident on a particle has been obtained in the study. The scattered fields and internal fields within the particle are expanded in terms of spherical vector wave functions, and an integral representation is used to compute the reflection of the scattered fields on the interface between two different optical media. The unknown expansion coefficients of the scattered fields are determined by applying boundary conditions and projection technique, and the scattering cross sections are evaluated with a brief analysis of the scattering characteristics.

Ahmed A. Elsayed et al.

Summary: A micro-optofluidic platform is proposed for fast quantification of microplastic particles in drinking water, utilizing micro-reservoirs and filters for quick imaging and spectroscopy. Passive size sorting and flow cytometry are used to further analyze and differentiate the particles based on size and chemical nature. Analysis of Pathogenic Bacterial and Yeast Biofilms Using the Combination of Synchrotron ATR-FTIR Microspectroscopy and Chemometric Approaches

Samuel Cheeseman et al.

Summary: This study uses synchrotron macro ATR-FTIR microspectroscopy to show differences in biofilms formed by MRSA, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. Polysaccharides were found to be the most significant variance between biofilm samples, with other spectral regions contributing to sample variation. This research will enhance understanding of microbial biofilms and provide a model for future research using synchrotron source ATR-FTIR microspectroscopy.
