Energy storage reduces costs and emissions even without large penetration of renewable energy: The case of China Southern Power Grid

Mingquan Li et al.

Summary: Variable renewable energy (VRE) and energy storage systems (ESS) are crucial for decarbonizing power systems. This study demonstrates that ESS reduces operational costs and CO2 emissions, even in systems with high shares of coal generation. The study also shows that when combined with VRE, ESS provides even greater benefits.

Planning for the evolution of the electric grid with a long-run marginal emission rate

Pieter Gagnon et al.

Summary: Emissions factors are widely used to estimate the impact of interventions on emissions in the electric sector, but commonly used metrics neglect the influence of electricity demand changes on the structural evolution of the grid. This study evaluates a lesser known metric, the long-run marginal emission rate (LRMER), and finds that it outperforms other metrics in predicting emissions from interventions, suggesting that adopting LRMER could improve decision-making.

Evaluating emerging long-duration energy storage technologies

Rui Shan et al.

Summary: We review commercially mature or under commercialization candidate long duration energy storage technologies, comparing their modularity, long-term energy storage capability, average capital cost, land-use footprint and equivalent efficiency. These insights are valuable to guide the development of long-duration energy storage projects and inspire potential use cases.

The curtailment paradox in the transition to high solar power systems

Bethany Frew et al.

Summary: As solar penetration levels increase, flexibility approaches can reduce curtailment, but the impact factors vary at different stages, and allowing renewable energy and storage to provide operating reserves can bring both costs and benefits, but also reduce incentives for solar to provide operating reserves.

Deleterious effects of strategic, profit-seeking energy storage operation on electric power system costs

Rui Shan et al.

Summary: Energy storage plays a crucial role in the energy transition, but there are operational modes that may conflict with wider power grid objectives while maximizing profits for storage system owners. This study compares different storage operation modes and highlights the essential role of policymakers and regulators in mitigating the potential negative effects.
