Electricity sector assessment in Nigeria: the post-liberation era

Olubayo Babatunde et al.

Summary: In order to improve the electricity services in Nigeria, the government has implemented a comprehensive reform of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, starting from rehabilitating the government-owned electricity infrastructures in 1999 and implementing the 2010 Power Sector Reform. While some stakeholders have seen the positive impact of these reforms, others are yet to experience the benefits. This study provides an overview of the past, present, and future of the Nigerian power sector, exploring its state of the art and proposing the necessary improvements for stabilization.

A review of stakeholders and interventions in Nigeria's electricity sector

Norbert Edomah et al.

Summary: The study reveals that external stakeholder groups, such as donor agencies and multi-lateral organizations, exert greater influence in Nigeria's electricity sector through financial interventions. Lack of coordination and engagement among various stakeholder groups poses a challenge to effective electricity infrastructure interventions that address the needs of people in society.

Power struggles: Governing renewable electricity in a time of technological disruption

Lucy Baker et al.

Summary: The regulation, ownership, and governance of the electricity sector have been the subject of debates, which have been disrupted by low-carbon technological developments. Germany prioritized decentralized renewable energy systems with community ownership, while South Africa favored utility-scale generation projects. Recent policies in Germany are now encouraging large-scale projects by corporate actors, while South Africa sees small-scale distributed generation by wealthy consumers due to the lack of appropriate legislation. These dynamics challenge the assumption that low-carbon technological change will automatically lead to a reconfiguration of power structures.
