Total Failure of Fenbendazole to Control Strongylid Infections in Czech Horse Operations

Summary: The control of strongylid infections in horses has become challenging due to anthelmintic resistance. This study in the Czech Republic evaluated the efficacy of different anthelmintics and found total failure of fenbendazole and reduced efficacy of pyrantel embonate. Ivermectin and moxidectin exhibited excellent efficacy. The findings highlight the need for advanced parasite control approaches to slow the spread of anthelmintic resistance.

Resistance to benzimidazoles, pyrimidines, and macrocyclic lactones has been documented in cyathostomins and Parascaris spp. The shortened egg reappearance period (ERP) observed in recent studies raises questions about the development of anthelmintic resistance, and more research is needed. Routine monitoring of anthelmintic efficacy is recommended.

Reduced Efficacy of Fenbendazole and Pyrantel Pamoate Treatments against Intestinal Nematodes of Stud and Performance Horses

Summary: Changes in the parasitic fauna of horses have led to cyathostomins becoming the major parasites in adult horses, while large strongyles have decreased in prevalence. Parascaris spp. remains the most important parasite in foals and weanlings. Anthelmintic resistance is prevalent worldwide in cyathostomins and Parascaris spp., impacting treatment decisions. Testing in Northern Italy found high rates of strongyle-type eggs in horses and lower rates of Parascaris spp., with reduced efficacy of fenbendazole and pyrantel pamoate against cyathostomins. Ground-based actions are needed to prevent clinical disease and reduce selection pressure of resistant parasites.
