Children's eating behaviours and related constructs: conceptual and theoretical foundations and their implications

Alan Russell et al.

Summary: Research on children's eating behaviors and related constructs is important for understanding their dietary intakes and healthy eating behaviors. However, there is limited clarity and theoretical foundations in defining and measuring these behaviors and constructs, leading to uncertainty in interpreting research findings. More attention should be directed towards the conceptual and theoretical foundations of children's eating behaviors and related constructs.

Measurement is the foundation of research and theory on children's eating behaviours: Current issues and directions for progress

C. G. Russell et al.

Summary: Eating behaviours play a role in food intake and the development of obesity. However, the measurement limitations hinder our understanding and influence on children's eating behaviours. This paper highlights the methodological and measurement issues in studying children's eating behaviours and proposes insights and strategies for advancing measurement approaches. To advance our understanding, psychometrically sound measurement instruments and procedures are needed for use in diverse populations and contexts.

Brief 'Appetitive Trait Tailored Intervention': Development in a Sample of Adults with Overweight and Obesity

Claudia Hunot-Alexander et al.

Summary: This study explored participants' experiences of a brief Appetitive Trait Tailored Intervention (ATTI) based on their Adult Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (AEBQ) scores, finding that most participants found the intervention helpful, personalized approach increased self-awareness and encouraged behavior changes, but low intensity of the intervention limited engagement for some.

Validity of the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire and Its Relationship with Parent-Reported Eating Behaviors among Adolescents in Portugal

Sarah Warkentin et al.

Summary: The validity of the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire (AEBQ) was tested on Portuguese adolescents, and it was found to be a valid tool for measuring appetitive traits in this population. The study provides evidence of internal consistency and associations with parent-reported eating behaviors and body mass index z-scores. The AEBQ can be a convenient and easy-to-use tool for large-scale research.

The prospective relation between eating behaviors and BMI from middle childhood to adolescence: A 5-wave community study

Oda Bjorklund et al.

Summary: The study found that interventions targeting obesogenic eating behaviors may be less effective in children older than age 6, as increases in BMI are more likely to predict changes in eating behaviors rather than the other way around.

Validity of the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire for adolescents treated in a weight management clinic

Stephen J. Molitor et al.

Summary: The study with 280 adolescents in a pediatric weight management clinic found that the seven-factor structure of AEBQ had a marginally acceptable fit for obese patients, with Food Approach scales showing better convergent validity and some clinical utility in identifying patients at increased risk for binge eating.

The association between childhood adiposity and appetite assessed using the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire and Baby Eating Behavior Questionnaire: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Alice Kininmonth et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify associations between appetitive traits measured by CEBQ/BEBQ questionnaires and child adiposity measures. The results showed consistent cross-sectional relationships between appetitive traits and child adiposity, with positive associations for food approach traits and negative associations for food avoidant traits. Prospective relationships from appetite to adiposity measures were also observed.

Concurrent Validity of the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire in a Canadian Sample

Tamara R. Cohen et al.

Summary: This study tested the factor structure of the AEBQ in Canadian adults and found that a seven-factor model had better fit statistics than the original eight-factor structure. The study also showed that the AEBQ had construct validity against the TFEQ-R18 and provided further evidence for the association of eating behaviors traits with BMI.

Appetite self-regulation declines across childhood while general self-regulation improves: A narrative review of the origins and development of appetite self-regulation

Alan Russell et al.

Summary: This review discusses the origins and development of appetite self-regulation (ASR) in childhood, focusing on components such as delay-of-gratification and caloric compensation. Evidence shows a decline in ASR components related to food approach during childhood, contrasting with the improvement in general self-regulation (GSR). There is a need for models of developmental changes in ASR to be formulated along with appropriate research designs.

Overweight, obesity, and thinness among a nationally representative sample of Norwegian adolescents and changes from childhood: Associations with sex, region, and population density

Bente Ovrebo et al.

Summary: The prevalence of overweight, obesity, and thinness among 13-year-old Norwegians appear to be established by age 8 years, with little evidence of changes from childhood to adolescence. Obesity was more prevalent in the Northern region and rural areas, while girls showed a trend towards higher odds of thinness compared to boys. The findings suggest the importance of early prevention and targeted interventions in specific areas.

Assessing Appetitive Traits Among Chinese Young Adults Using the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire: Factor Structure, Gender Invariance and Latent Mean Differences, and Associations With BMI

Jinbo He et al.

Summary: The study examined a new Chinese translation of the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire (C-AEBQ) in a Chinese young adult sample. The C-AEBQ showed strong measurement invariance and reliability across genders. Additionally, Satiety Responsiveness, Slowness in Eating, and Food Fussiness were inversely associated with body mass index.
