Summary: This study designed and developed strain-hardening alkali-activated fly ash/slag composites (SH-AAFSC) with remarkable compressive strength and tensile ductility. The research demonstrated a compressive strength of 94.4-180.7 MPa and a tensile strain capacity of 8.1-9.9%, marking a significant advancement in alkali-activated materials. Through a multi-scale investigation, the study revealed the influence of GGBS content and w/p ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Additionally, a strong linear relationship between fiber-bridging strength and the average elastic modulus of matrix was observed. The findings pave the way for producing SH-AAFSC with exceptional performance for resilient and sustainable infrastructures.

Summary: This study aims to promote the application of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) by reducing costs and using local materials. The performance of ECC reinforced by surface-modified PET fibers was investigated. The modification by coating PET fibers with graphene oxide (GO) using polydopamine (PDA) as the medium significantly improved the surface roughness of the fibers and increased the frictional bond strength with the cement matrix. Tensile strength and strain of ECCs were improved by incorporating modified PET fibers and increasing the concentration of GO in the secondary functionalization.

Summary: Among the increasingly popular miniature and flexible smart electronics, two-dimensional materials show great potential in the development of flexible electronics owing to their layered structures and outstanding electrical properties. MXenes have attracted much attention in flexible electronics owing to their excellent hydrophilicity and metallic conductivity. This study proposes a strategy for rapid gas foaming to construct interlayer tunable MXene aerogels, which can generate maximized electron channels under pressure for effective utilization of the surface metal properties of MXene. The resulting pressure sensor exhibits high sensitivity, fast response time, and good cycling stability, and has applications in various fields.

Summary: This paper presents a novel strategy for concrete curing using solar thermal energy storage based on phase change material (PCM), aiming to prevent frost damage to concrete at an early stage and promote rapid concrete strength growth in cold climates. The proposed method utilizes the latent heat of the thermal energy storage layer (TESL) containing PCM to continuously cure the concrete at a positive temperature, with a transparent insulation layer (TIL) to absorb thermal energy through solar radiation. The study also proposes a numerical method for designing the TESL under different climatic conditions, with an optimal thickness ranging from 0.87 cm to 4.86 cm. Experimental results demonstrate that the concrete specimens cured using this strategy achieve excellent temperature history and reach the design strength in just 60 hours. Economic evaluation results show that the proposed curing method is cost-effective and provides significant energy saving and emission reduction throughout the service cycle. This work provides an efficient and clean solution for rapid concrete construction in cold climates.

Summary: MXenes have emerged as promising reinforcements in polymer-based nanocomposites due to their combined mechanical and electronic properties with functional groups. The presence of these functional groups significantly affects the electronic properties, dispersion, and interfacial bonding of MXenes in composites. Through Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations, it was found that the cohesion at the interface follows the order O > F > OH, thanks to the formation of hydrogen bonds and lower charge transfer. This allows for the prediction of conductive PE-MXene composites for applications such as Electromagnetic Interference Shielding (EMI) or artificial muscles.

Summary: In this work, crosslinked paraffin/polyvinyl alcohol/MXene composite films were prepared by a physical blending method. MXene played a key role in enhancing mechanical strength, light-to-heat conversion efficiency, and thermal conductivity, while maintaining latent heat. The improved flexibility was attributed to MXene nanosheets providing additional hydrogen bond binding sites. The MXene also effectively improved light-to-heat conversion ability and heat transfer rate. The films showed repeatable light-to-heat conversion stability and good compatibility and stability.

Summary: This study investigates the surface functionalization of polyethylene fibers using tannic acid/ethanolamine and the enhancement of bonding characteristics in cement-based matrices. The results showed notable improvements in interfacial shear strength, pullout energy, crack-bridging force, and crack-bridging energy for the modified fibers compared to the raw fibers. The tannic acid/ethanolamine coatings not only enhanced the bonding between the fibers and the cement matrix, but also slightly improved the mechanical properties of the fibers.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the effects of temperature and moisture content on the mechanical properties of cement-based materials and explores the mechanisms of compressive strength and tensile properties of SHCC serving in cold environments. The research findings show that with decreasing temperature and increasing moisture content, the strengths of SHCC increase while the tensile strain capacity decreases significantly. The study provides micromechanical model parameters and reliability prediction methods that can guide the design and engineering applications of SHCC in severe cold environments.

Summary: This study investigated the environmental fate of Ti(3)C(2)Tx MXene in groundwater, which has high cytotoxicity but has received little attention so far. Soil colloids, including sodium humate, montmorillonite, and natural soil, were found to significantly affect the colloidal dispersion stability and degradation kinetics of Ti(3)C(2)Tx MXene. The presence of soil colloids promoted the degradation of Ti(3)C(2)Tx MXene, with sodium humate and montmorillonite showing stronger effects compared to natural soil.
