The Continued Rise of Venous Thromboembolism Across US Children's Hospitals

Sarah H. O'Brien et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the rate of pediatric venous thromboembolism (VTE) from 2008 to 2019 and found a significant increase in VTE cases during this period. These findings highlight the need for more effective VTE prevention strategies.

Summary: This study identified five independent risk factors for hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism in critically ill children and developed a risk assessment model. Prospective validation study is underway to investigate the efficacy and safety of prophylactic anticoagulation in high-risk children.

Venous Thromboembolism among Critically Ill Children: A Narrative Review

Anthony A. Sochet et al.

Summary: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients, including children. Critically ill children should be routinely evaluated for VTE when showing new signs of venous congestion, acute inflammation, or unexplained acute organ dysfunction.

MiRNA 126 as a New Predictor Biomarker in Venous Thromboembolism of Persistent Residual Vein Obstruction: A Review of the Literature Plus a Pilot Study

Pietro Rossetti et al.

Summary: Venous thromboembolism is the third most common cardiovascular disease, with interleukins and micro-ribonucleic acids proposed as potential biomarkers for predicting outcomes. This pilot study found higher levels of miRNA 126 in VTE patients at baseline, and identified miRNA 126 as a predictor of poor early recanalization. Further studies are needed to validate the utility of miRNAs as diagnostic biomarkers for VTE.
