Differential effects of chloride salts on seed germination and seedling growth of Cistus monspeliensis: Towards revegetation of the Mediterranean salt-contaminated soils

Mohammed Dadach et al.

Summary: Soil salinity poses a serious threat to the Mediterranean basin, affecting crops and natural habitats. This research examined the effects of four chloride salts on seed germination and seedling growth of Cistus monspeliensis, a Mediterranean shrub. The study found that germination decreased with increasing salt concentrations, with KCl and MgCl2 having the greatest impact. However, NaCl and mixed salts showed priming effects in enhancing germination speed in salty soils. The findings suggest that C. monspeliensis could be useful for restoring chloride-dominated salty soils.

Modeling the influence of temperature, salt and osmotic stresses on seed germination and survival capacity of Stipa tenacissima L.

Khouloud Krichen et al.

Summary: This research utilized a modelling approach to identify the cardinal temperature, recovery capacity, and adaptation potential of Stipa tenacissima L. seeds, considering dormancy, viability, and exposure to salinity and drought. The study found that the seeds had uniform yields and sizes, and the thermal time model analysis revealed an optimal germination temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, a base temperature of 0.6 degrees Celsius, and a ceiling temperature of 31 degrees Celsius.

Iso-osmotic calcium nitrate and sodium chloride stresses have differential effects on growth and photosynthetic capacity in tomato

Di Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the growth disruption caused by Ca(NO3)2 and NaCl salts in tomato plants was investigated. It was found that the stresses caused by Ca(NO3)2 and NaCl increased levels of nonstructural carbohydrates and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tomatoes, while reducing foliar photosynthetic capacity. Na+ accumulation caused by NaCl stress disrupted photosynthesis to a greater extent compared to the Ca(NO3)2 treatment. Interestingly, Na+ increased nonstructural carbohydrate levels and disrupted feedback inhibition of photosynthesis.

Quantifying Osmotic Stress and Temperature Effects on Germination and Seedlings Growth of Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) via Hydrothermal Time Model

Kiran Arshad et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the germination behavior of fenugreek under different temperature and water potential conditions and investigates its germination model. The study finds that fenugreek exhibits the highest germination index at 20 degrees Celsius and is sensitive to both temperature and water potential.

Climate change impacts on soil salinity in agricultural areas

Dennis L. Corwin

Summary: Changes in climate patterns are negatively impacting agriculture, especially in arid regions. Proximal/remote sensors are useful in assessing the impact of climate change on soil salinity across scales. Factors such as salt-water intrusion, shallow water tables, and degraded water reuse will lead to increased soil salinity. There is a need for infrastructure and protocols to monitor soil salinity across multiple scales.

Chemical seed priming alleviates salinity stress and improves Sulla carnosa germination in the saline depression of Tunisia

Amal Bouzidi et al.

Summary: The study focused on the effects of salinity on seed germination of Sulla carnosa in saline depressions of Tunisia. Salinity stress significantly decreased germination capacity and rate, with osmotic effect being the most limiting factor until 15g L-1 NaCl. Some priming agents showed efficiency in improving germination capacity and conferring salt tolerance up to 15g L-1 NaCl.
